Yes there are but they getting costly hehe. Ok, Ill take it all onboard and see what I come up with.

The reason for wanting wifi is things like phones and tablets and even notebooks really arent designed to be wired up to something. ease of use and all that UX stuff

powerline is always a great option, just be careful if it goes over breakers. you might not end up with the headline speeds :)

I've got a pretty big house, wifi here doesn't drop below 200mbit throughput within the house.

This costed me nowhere near as much as it should have, there was a very good deal on when i got my set of E400's. (yes it takes multiples to handle decent coverage)

If you can't run wires, i'd give powerline a go before looking to extend wifi.

The new mesh gear that dedicates a 5G channel to backhaul certainly isn't bad. older gear that works on the idea of extending (or repeating) wifi generally halfs your throughput instantly.

Don't be fooled by a long range product, often this is simply increased power.

As the end of the day, it might just be the range of this RG659, there is no doubt a quality asus or limksys is going to have better coverage, which MIGHT just be enough for me not to need a repeater or ethernet over power or anything.

so far the idea if like the most is an ethernet cable across the dining room and kitchen edges, then use something as an access point from there, which halves the distance and nearly makes it line of sight. but the access point would have to be cheap, can you use the RG659 in some kind of access point method? It cost $15. as cheap as Im going to find if it can act as an access point.....

Be careful of OEM whitelisting on WLAN cards, for example a 2012 ultrabook may not take any wireless AC cards even if the card is the right form factor.

toejam that access point is beast mode. i wonder how much coverage it gives? i need to look at how that works, is it the same principal but comes out as a wifi access point?

speaking of the minipcie card.

i was wondering, do these highgain usb points work? I dont mean the ones that you wire too but stick out like a pendrive kind of size. Or the other ones that are basically USB aerials with an AC chip?

so many darn options.

so using the HG659 as an access point via ethernet half way down the hall wouldnt be ok?

Wow I ran speedtest to just see the penetration of essentially 3 walls, get to the line of site hall way and it maxes out in speed.

There is a powerplug out there, I could sneak a device next to edge of door way and Id have line of site of my notebook to the AP that is powered just around the corner.

Surely in that situation WIFI Access point or repeater makes sense. Im getting maximum bandwidth just at entrance of the door way, i have a power point and the devices would be line of site to the access point?

Surely this particular situation that makes sense to use the wifi? Especially given Im not expecting full Ethernet level bandwidth in the bedroom?

Well considering that you on another thread said that you were buying a 30 meg product and only getting 20, I think that anything should be able to deliver the sub-dsl speeds that you need.

I just dont have faith in this hg659, i dont know why, it just feels kind of cheap.

Line of sight makes such an immediate difference with the dual band ac.

What would I plug this USB repeater into?

Outside all of this, adding all the cost together, would an ac2600 4x4 stream device be a bad idea? Im getting signal, its just not strong with the hg659 being fairly weak on the throughput perspective?

Given Im refering to something made in this year, its resale value should be up there. I just saw a linksys wrt ac1900 go for $150, and asus ac68u's, both sell for about $120 over the weekend and these are 4 year old devices with less power/technology and still selling for a good sum.

I think the mistake I made with my NF4V was buying something very generic. So buying a generic ac1900 device is a bad idea imo, ie an nf8ac.
