All those devices fail to route pppoe full speed. Although at 100/20 it's not an issue if you upgrade past 200/200...

Amplifi AFi-R on current firmware can get to about 800mbps on a gigabit connection (with pppoe and vlan taggings - probbably a bit more if your ISP doesn't use PPPoE). So not really a big problem as it's about the sam thruput cap as on the er-x

That's why i say the clock one... i dont recall what model it is, i just know that a certain Fixed line engineer here used one for quite a while and it physically could only do like 300mbit

If they have now fixed that in a firmware, Great!

That's Me. I found it gave good speedtest results, but on real world throughput testing it was significantly worse than the 659b.

Anyone want a Cheap Amplifi HD (The one with the cool clock :-)?

Actually - thinking about the fact that I am only on 100/20 - it seems the Edgerouter X is much cheaper and would work just as well as the Lite in my environment. If I wanted to - presumably I have to enable hardware offloading in the CLI, but probably don't need to on my lower speed plan? Also - will I be able to use Eth2-3 as managed switch ports in the same network, if I go for the X rather than the Lite?

We're only on 200/whatever with bigpipe - and like you I went with the Edgerouter X due to it being a more recent device, and at the time a decent bit cheaper.

Speed test (cli) claims that I'm getting the correct speeds through.

You can configure the remaining ports (1 port for WAN) to become part of "switch0" which might allow you to do you're managed ports? Our network has a managed switch in it, so I'm using the ER-X as a router ... so not sure I can confirm properly there for you.

anything specific you tested against? when I was still letting the afi-r route (as opposed to acting as a simple AP) I was getting ok speeds from local CDN (saw 600+ on a few downloads)

of course now I'm running an er-x flashed with OpenWRT - so I suspect I'll be lynched :-)

Thanks to everyone for support, plus of course the invaluable advice from Michael Murphy's Edgerouter tutorial page. Edgerouter X arrived today, and it was relatively straight forward to update the firmware, set up the basic settings, and enable hwnat offload. So far seems to be working without a hiccup, although of course my 100/20 plan is probably not going to tax it very much.

Question? There doesn't seem to be anywhere to specify the dns servers for the Spark network. Does that matter?

using PPOE (which spark requires) it should be picking up the servers automatically - you can override that if you so wish though (say you want to use google dns or quad 9)
