My step son wanted WiFi extended from his house to his garage and sleepout and tried a WiFi extender - pretty useless - especially as there was a lot of metal in the way.

Best option we came up with was a Power Line network extender attach to his router in the house and with the remote end with built in WiFi.

His house and garage wiring was on the same single phase.

Something like this as an example:

My first ever AM radio network connection was with a 1MHz AM crystal(OA91) radio receiver.

You dont need to worry about feeling dumb. Its part of the learning experience isnt it?

You can buy dedicated wifi extenders (which you probably know of course).

Items like these https://www.pbtech.co.nz/category/networking/wireless-extenders

So something like this one https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NRETPL0205/TP-Link-RE205-Dual-Band-AC750-Wi-Fi-Range-Extender

(currently around $75) generally work well enough, but you do have to locate them where they can still get an ok-ish signal from the original wifi and they then provide quite a good local boost if you get them set up ok. Generally pretty easy to set up. There are also more specific units that cost a lot of money that can send wifi over very long distances (a km or so), but I dont think this is what you want.

If there is any way you can run a network cable from your house to the garage, or use a  powerline unit to use the power wiring to extend your network then they would be the best methods.

Powerline units (as mentioned above) use the electrical cabling in your house to send data. So you would plug one unit in next to your current router and connect it to the the router with a network cable - at the other end (the garage) you would have another unit plugged into to the power and should have an ethernet port or wifi unit that can pick up the connection. The garage and house circuits would all need to be on the same switchboard and there are quite a lot of things that can interfere with the powerline units.

Powerline units: https://www.pbtech.co.nz/category/networking/powerline-networking?qr=catnetworking

Have a look on youtube for some videos on how powerline networking works.

If you are building the garage, presumably you are running some power to it - so best suggestion would be to also run an ethernet cable to it.

Best answer is :
just dont try it , save yourself alot of grief.  :-)

Go and buy something designed for this instead ( powerline kit , wifi bridge etc)
Yes it usually could be made to work (assuming a lan cable run between them)). Its not worth the hassels , a power cut or firmware update could reset & then start DHCP conflicts taking down everything .
Been there , tried that .

OP has said he can run a cable to the garage, so the suggestions for powerline networking aren't the best solution.  What he has tried should work, once the cable is connected

Personally I'd also but a separate AP, but re-using the Huawei is worth a try
