So we are building a garage and I'd like internet there. So I been reading and watching heaps of videos on how to use this older modem as WiFi extender.

It says, the first step, you need to change the IP address (so I changed it to 192.168.1.220) and turn of DHCP. Once I do this, the interface page of the modem becomes unavailable.

What am I doing wrong?

Are you trying to access it via its new IP address?

Do you have an IP assigned that is within the same network, because with DHCP off you will not have one assigned so you either need to be plugged into the main network as well, or else manually assign the PC with an IP to get back to the web interface to finish setting it up.

Not sure if I understand what you are saying. The current modem, the new fibre one, has ip 192.168.1.254 and it says the IP address pool is .64 to .253. So I think the answer is yes?

Not enough info...

Is this what you want to do with the hardware?

Edit: WAN to ONT not OTP

My first ever AM radio network connection was with a 1MHz AM crystal(OA91) radio receiver.

Yes. Not set a gw yet though. I can't reach the interface anymore once I only change the IP.

I can connect to the wifi on that modem just can't access it.

Not sure about what you are referring to when you say 'modem'

HG659 or Fibre router?

Maybe the HG659 is set to 'not allow' admin via WiFi.

Guess you may need to hook up directly from computer to HG659 with a LAN cable to check your HG659 admin.

It would be useful if you hook into the HG659 via LAN and establish a view to your Fibre router and the internet and then resolve the HG659 WiFi issues.

If the HG659 is not issuing IP addresses because DHCP is turned off, then you may need to set your computer to a static LAN IP.... say 192.168.1.100...

Lastly.... this should perhaps have been first :-)

If you are hooking up to the HG659 (192.168.1.220) via WiFi with DHCP=off then you will need to set your computer with a static IP address (192.168.1.100)...

So I set a static IP on the Macbook. The interface is still available when connected to the HG659 WiFi.
So this is good news. The bad news....

When I switch back to the Fibre router internet is not available???

You have got the HG659 connected to the Fibre Router through the LAN port, not WAN? Should be LAN to LAN with the cable.

In fact - are you even using a cable to connect the two?

It should be pretty simple (I would use an IP address for the HG659 as one that isn't in the DHCP range, eg. 192.168.1.50).

I don't know my way around a Macbook.

So... what happens when you put the Macbook back to obtain an IP address automatically.

Can you get to the internet then via the Fibre router?

I am assuming you have not changed the Fibre router LAN IP config.

No, they are not connected with a cable!

I was in the understanding that it could be connected via WiFi? Otherwise I can just run a cable to the garage?

Fibre worked fine when IP is on Auto.

I have not changed any setting on the Fibre modem yet.

I might be in over my head. Thought is was a simple thing

They will need to be connected LAN port to LAN port in order to provide internet out in the garage, they won't mesh together, they aren't designed to do this.

Effectively all you have at the moment is a router advertising an SSID which will never provide internet.

The Huawei can NOT act as a wireless client and connect to the fibre router. The Huawei can only operate as an access point (and have other clients connect to it). Simple.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.
