I was using wireguard with a port forward to access everything. Not an ideal situation but it worked for years no issues. In the last few weeks I've changed over to tailscale and I'm impressed. No impact to speeds and access is easy as. I have unraid and truenas servers in different locations so they can now talk with each other and I can access either from anywhere.

Tailscale is just a broker for wireguard. The traffic is managed on each device also you don't need to pay for a static IP anymore.
