This is all too hard, looks like you have windows authentication issues, and an old windows 10 box

 

just get a cheap printer with an ethernet port and talk to it directly via IP

 

Office Jet 8120e is like $90

Nope, not replacing the printer/scanner, I only got it last year and it cost me $500. And all my machines are now running 11.

 

I guess I was just hoping to install updated drivers on the desktop and everything would work as before, but I'll just have to install the HP Smart thing on the boy's desktop machine so he can print as well (although I don't think he does).

It does, but the issue was getting a remote machine on the network to connect to it wirelessly.

 

Anyway, it seems to be all resolved now.
