I would get a pfSense box: https://shop.netgate.com/products/netgate-4200-base-pfsense-security-gateway?_gl=1%2A14evtkk%2A_gcl_au%2AMjE0MzA2ODc5Mi4xNzE4NDA0OTg5%2A_ga%2AMTA2OTUxNTIyLjE3MTg0MDQ5ODk.%2A_ga_TM99KBGXCB%2AMTcxODQwNDk4OS4xLjEuMTcxODQwNDk5Ni41My4wLjA.

In the meantime, while I'm figuring out my final setup, I threw together a quick and dirty pfSense box last night with some 2.5G NICs I had lying around.

So far, so good. It's been quite the experience setting it up 😁

Looks good. Might be overkill for pfsense to run an entire box?

Yeah, it's an old i7 6500, so it's a bit too power hungry for my taste. I have a Proxmox cluster with more efficient PCs (see image below), but I wasn't comfortable virtualizing pfSense at this stage.

One of those fanless mini PCs from AliExpress seems to be the next best option.

A fan less pc from aliexpress would do the same job cheaper?

Could be, but with a pfSense box I know it works, and it is supported.

"I've ordered a Firewalla Gold SE from the USA"

7 days later ...

First impressions: I am underwhelmed:

PROS

Good build quality
Small and silent (no fan, runs warm, not hot)
Powerful processor
It can be used in router or bridge mode
2 x 2.5Gbit ports, 2 x 1.0Gbit ports - supports 2.5Gbit LAN

CONS

Overpriced
Only available from their US website - delivered from China - with expensive shipping
US 5V PSU supplied (plug adapter or new 5V USB-C PSU required)
Setup requires a mobile phone, using Bluetooth (no desktop option)
Steep learning curve with setup software
Numerous "alarms" detecting normal LAN activity

If you've ordered it with an SSD, replace it as soon as the box arrives.

We ordered 5 boxes like this to test PFSense and every single one had a failed drive within a year.
