kiwifidget:  Do the ConstantVigil units beep when the mains power is off?

Some of them do - not the Sentry Lite, but the Sentry Integrated (Mk 2) does.

xpd:

I bought one of these a while back - Buy the Eaton 5E Tower UPS, 650VA / 360W, 2 ANZ Outlets, Line Interactive with... ( 5E650iUSB-AU ) online - PBTech.co.nz . Keeps my ONT, router, AP's and "server" running for 20mins after power is out. If you only want ONT and router, then it'd prob run for hour or more.

For the price I couldn't complain.

I have the same device just for the ONT - internet access is critical - as well as a raspberry pi 3 for monitoring the unit via USB (no apps yet do proactive event triggering but i remain hopeful)

I've got one of these Buy the Eaton 3S 850VA / 510W Standby Powerboard Desktop UPS, 4 X Sockets with... ( 3S850AU ) online - PBTech.co.nz for the ONT and UDM router. It lasted about 3 hours when we had power out for lines maintenance.

Went with Constant Vigil Sentry Lite. I had never even heard of them before and I think that is the perfect solution for my application.

Hi team...been off site for a while. Came back to research backup power for ONT/Switch in Garage and router upstairs.

Used this thread identify and order 2 x Constant Vigil sentry integrated Mk2's and now have the upstairs router working (little bit of trial and error with the plug as some look similar but are not).

Hit a snag with the Chorus ONT Type 100 square power plug, so have just emailed Constant Vigil to get one of these.

Obvious advice, but check the plugs and request the ONT connector with your order.  I was talking to a sales guy pre order and mentioned Fiber ONT.....but this did not trigger a question from him....got the "I am not a tech person" vibe. Ultimately it is on me.

Products look solid and well made, only time will tell.

Re question re beeping above - The unit I have already installed beeps once when power goes off/on and then just flashes in LED when power is off.

I've had a Sentry MK2 for a while and it's been great. I asked a few questions from the manufacturer. Here is the response which might be of interest to some of you.

1. The Aux Out connection is a direct pass through of the power in (not the Aux In). This allows daisy-chaining of units up to the maximum power rating of the power supply. We normally restrict this to two to ensure some margin, but some low power systems have seen 3 units cascaded.

2. The 2x4 connector is indeed a Molex mini-fit connector. It is used on a number of older Chorus installations and the pinout is custom to those devices.

3. AUX IN can be a second power supply or direct from a solar panel. The higher voltage input is typically prioritised so the system is suited to 20V panels on that port, being higher than the 12V main input.

4. The connectors may be slightly loose. Tolerances of the internal mechanicals are minimal though and absolutely no damage will occur.

5. Periodically we release firmware upgrades and the service port is used to upload those. The port can be plugged into a PC and some information is output under normal use when connected to a PC. Some clients have requested custom data to be output from this port which can be used to trigger controlled shut-down of other devices for example. There is a PC application available for you to try so let me find the details and send it through.

6. The ON/OFF switch isolates the battery for shipping. The unit will function without the switch being ON and outputs are still enabled but it will generate an audible alert (and ALARM LED) at 30 second intervals warning that the backup battery isn't connected. If you get other audible alerts (typically several years later and following active monitoring of the battery health), this indicates a failing battery.

I read that the Sentry Integrated MK2 has a user replaceable battery.

Does the plain Sentry Integrated have one also, or once its battery is kaput you have to buy a whole new thing?

Great service from Constant Vigil team ...they shipped the Chorus ONT connector free.

I then ran into an issue with the HP 1410 Switch having its own HP style connector (male pin inside).  In frustration I went to PB Tech and grabbed a cheapie replacement switch (will use HP elsewhere) only to find I still needed to source a male to male 1.3 dc cable for the Sentry mk2 5v output port and the cheap switch.  have hit up Constant Virgil again (I expect to pay this time) otherwise will be quick Jaycar trip and soldering session (I cannot see a made up cable on their site).

So do check all targeted devices for both power requirements and plugs pre ordering so the team can look after you and make life easier....don't be a Muppet like me.
