jakebriggs: eh I'd rather have it contained locally

Meh it's just DNS... You didn't want to really manage anything so something like NextDNS was perfect for that. Could have been done by now. Blatantly simple to put it somewhere else at anytime and only takes a matter of seconds especially with Docker.

If you want to self-host -

PiHole - https://github.com/pi-hole/pi-hole
Adguard - https://github.com/AdguardTeam/AdGuardHome
Grab a Mikrotik and configure that.
Or, just configure dnsmasq yourself on your own network.

I get you're oldschool but there's no issues using off the shelf opensource products or products that have been around for years.

I wouldn't say I'm old school - NAT Loopback is the simplest solution here, the HG659 doesn't support it, so I'll get something that does. Its so simple that I set it up literally years ago once and forgot I'd even done it and I've changed my internal network several times since adding new devices that I may want to access from outside and inside and never had to janitor it. DNS won't give me that.

RunningMan:

If you want it local then you're going to have to set up something internal running DNS. Be it replacing the router with something capable or a seperate DNS instance on an existing or new piece fo hardware.

have to? I don't think so. Less than 24 hours ago I had this all running fine without running my own DNS

In the first post you wanted to buy a new router, all suggestions are all rubbish and basically 24 hours have passed since the last functioning. What was your problem again? 😎

- NET: FTTH & VDSL, OPNsense, 10G backbone, GWN APs
- SRV: 12 RU HA server cluster, 0.1 PB storage on premise
- IoT:   thread, zigbee, tasmota, BidCoS, LoRa, WX suite, IR
- 3D:    two 3D printers, 3D scanner, CNC router, laser cutter

He's saying you asked for alternatives to not having to buy a new router and pretty much discounted all of the suggestions straight away.

Buying a new router seems to be the solution then.

I’m sorry, I really do not know why you are asking if you still seem to know „the better“ solution against all good advise.

I didn't ask for alternatives, I asked how I might make the router I have work or if perhaps ipv6 might help and suggested I may have to buy a new router.

I do appreciate the alternative suggestions - I'm not above a hacky work around after all, but a DNS based solution just isn't appropriate for my needs.

I didn't know any solution when I asked, although I suspected it was "buy a new router" - but the HG659 is a common router and perhaps someone did figure out how to configure it to work.
