Thanks again freitasm. I tried the test and my speed is pathetically slow @4.9kbps :(
Is there something i can do to change this? Can it be the bluetooth connection or its my isp speed is bad??

Also the modem which is being used now is the default bluetooth modem. If I change to bluetooth for nokia modem, will it make a difference?

When using GPRS your provider is the ISP. You can check with then. Installing the modem driver might change something, but in my case I'm not using it at all and it works fine.

Also, if there's a proxy (even a transparent one), then speed shown will be between the server and the proxy, not your computer.

One other test you can certainly do is simply ping a host, like www.wired.com and see the times you get.

No, the USB interface will not impact on this...

You're welcome; it just happens that I'm updating the news at this time...

update:

I called up my provider and they confirm that the speed I shud be getting is 17kpbs but Im getting only 4??? He said its due to the tower near to me? So basically the speed is dependant to the tower u r closest to? is that true?? sounds like a whole load of bull to me.

thanks for replies/comments

Being closer to a tower should help increasing speed. But there's also the problem of sharing the bandwidth. Have a look in our What is GPRS? article to find out more...
