There are 3 modems installed under modems in device manager. I didnt install them....i guess the bluetooth software did that?

The modems are: Bluetooth Fax Modem, Bluetooth modem and bluetooth null modem.

There is also a Nokia USB phone modem but that has a yellow exclamation.

You should be able to connect using the Bluetooth Modem. Make sure the phone has Bluetooth on and it's not currently connected to Nokia PC Suite.

You can check if the communications are working by going to the Control Panel, open the Modem applet, select the Bluetooth Modem and click the Properties button.

Now change to the Diagnostics tab and click the Query Modem button.

You should see a response with model, versions and other information. If you have this working, the dial up should work fine. In this case your dial up configuration is wrong, not the Bluetooth.

This is what you should see as a result of the modem query:

thanks for reply freitasm.

I just figured that I had not installed the nokia modem so I downloaded 3650_ModemSetup.exe from nokia web site and installed it. I need to have this modem installed right?

Now the problem is....when I try to install it, it is not letting me select bluetooth....only infrared??? The bluetooth option is there....but greyed out. I dont know wots happening :(

Earlier I was using IR but not anymore. I wanna use it for bluetooth.

I tried to install a nokia modem manually but when I select nokia3650 for bluetooth....next window shows install on selected com ports....but none are selected and no ports are visible???

I read sumwhere on the forum that I gotta view hidden ports and delete a few....i did that.....but still no ports are shown available when i try to install modem.

Pls help!! :( :( :(

The best option to start with is to removed your current Bluetooth software, reboot, check the available comp ports and reinstall the software.

You don't necessarily need the Nokia modem software, you can use a generic one, but it's good to have it.

After installing the Bluetooth software, open My Bluetooth Network, go to Entire Bluetooth Neighborhood and find/pair the mobile phone.

Once it's paired, right-click the icon corresponding to the phone and select Connect Dial up networking. This will force the first connection, and the computer should now recognise this as a valid dial up modem.

It should bring a dialog asking what number to dial, username and password. Fill the blanks and try connecting.

thanks freitasm. I re-installed everything and finally got all my ports back.

Now the problem is the nokia modem software wont let me install bluetooth option, only infrared. So i continued with infra-red and got it all working but the speed is slow and browsing is almost impossible because infra-red is so slow :(

I again tried to install bluetooth, but the option is greyed out ie. not available. I dont understand why?

When I try to use another modem from the list, it installs but wont work. When I dial out it give a modem hardware problem error "Error 692: There was a hardware failure in the modem (or other connecting device)"

What wrong am I doing?

Also whenever i try to dial, the pc suite starts....is that ok? Should I disable pc suite??

thanks for helping freitasm.

This is the modem installed: Mokia 3650 (bluetooth)
This is the error I get when I try to query the modem under diagnostics:
1) Shows connecting to modem
2) Bluetooth icon goes green
3) Bluetooth connection icon appears on the phone
4) Then icon on phone goes off, icon on pc turns white and I get an error msg "The modem failed to respond.Make sure it is properly connected and turned on, verify that the interupt for the port is properly set"

Under client applications, serial port is set to com port 3.

Modem is also installed on com port 3.

My device is paired and pc suite is working just fine on bluetooth. Pls help.....thanks

What you're describing seem like one of these possible problems:

  • number to dial is wrong
  • no answer on the other side
  • no data available on your GSM contract
  • wrong initialisation string
  • incorrect username or password on dial up

As I understand you've used it before with IR, so you should have data on your contract.

You say the Bluetooth icon goes green. So it's using the phone as the modem. Have you tried creating a dial up connection manually? Right-click My Network Places, select Properties and then double-click Make New Connection. Enter everything and select Modem - Bluetooth Modem (COMx).

Make sure you enter the correct phone number and try connecting.

It should connect through your mobile. If it fails again, I'd say it's not Bluetooth.

    hi freitasm,

I installed the modem, which is installed on port 3.

Bluetooth serial port is also set on port 3.

But when I go to create a connection manually, it creates one but chooses a modem on com port 0 or 1 and immediately an X mark appears beside it with the msg "device missing". When i go into propeties it shows something like "Bluetooth modem ()" or "Bluetooth modem com port 1".

Why is my connection not able to use the modem i installed on com port 3?

Also, when I re-install widcom and setup my serial port, it automatically sets up a dial-up connection with the name "BluetoothConnection". But same thing, it displays an X across it with the msg "device missing" and Im not able to use that dial-up connection.

Im going crazy!!! Thanks for ur patience and help.

I was up till 4am last night and still no bluetooth :(

Here is the steps im doing, pls tell if im doing something wrong:

    1) Install widcom(using installable which came with my msi bt adapter)

    2) Install modem on com port 3 in control panel. Here i choose "nokia 3650 bluetooth modem"

    3) Setup serial port in bluetooth places. This gets created automatically on com port 3.

    4) Under dial-up, a connection gets created automatically ith the name "BluetoothConnection". Now this has an X mark across it with the message "device missing". Under its properties, it shows "Modem on port()" device missing.
Even if i try to create a new connection manually, it again gets created with an X mark across it and under properties, it will show "modem on com port 1" device missing.
No matter what i try, i cant get it to use the nokia modem i installed on com port 3. It wont even show-up in the properties of the dial-up connection.

Pls help....im desperate, no sleep since last 3 consequetive nights :(

Yeskia, installing the modem is optional. You don't need to install the modem. You can follow the instructions I gave on my post of 01/09/2003 09:11:05 instead of the guide.

When you right-click the icon corresponding to your mobile simply select Connect Bluetooth Dial-Up Networking and this should initiate the connection directly from there.

    Good luck!

Great stuff. Shame didn't work on XP for you. I've used my Bluetooth (TDK and Bluetooth) dongles on two friend's Windows XP desktops and they always worked fine.

The speed will depend on your connection. If you're connecting to an ISP via CSD the maximum speed is 9.6kbps (some network top at 14.4kbps). If it's GPRS it'll be around 42kbps.

You can use this page for an idea. It's not 100%, if your connection has a proxy it'll show as faster than it really is.

CSD is the data call when you use dial up instead of GPRS.
