cldlr76: Cool thanks for you help.
The 2 black cables come into the house from the demarc point on the outside of the house so there is probably only about 500mm of that cable so I'll just remove the electrical connector block remove the white cable and use the gel connectors to join the black cable to the splitter then run cat5 to the 2 jacks.

Does the cupboard have a space where you could permanently (and tidy!!) fix the splitter without being obtrusive or touching stuff in the cupboard? then you could easily connect the master jack to the filtered pair and another jack to the ADSL pair.

Where are you planning to put the modem, nearby or pretty far away? I have $5 worth of Cat5 that would do it if you want some help, but you also want to tidy up the stuff in the garage though. Maybe could install a punchdown block high up on the wall there.

Time to find a new industry!

Yeah I'll tidy the stuff in the garage up as well, I'm running cat5 through the house as we renovate each room, at the moment one of the lounges as been done and its just running back to a switch in the garage at the moment. I'm planning on buying a patch panel in the next couple of weeks so when I do that I'll hook up 4 ports as phone lines.

I'm planning on putting the ADSL jack in the garage where the patch panel and switch will be. At the moment the router is in the office which is directly above where the switch is in the garage and connected to the switch with a patch cable running through the floor. Because of the wireless aspect it might stay that way, although I do need to buy a new router (the current one is still just ADSL) so maybe I'll buy an ADSL2+ modem which will sit in the in the garage and a seperat WIFI access point which can sit upstairs somewhere. Any thoughts on this?

Its not important that the filter goes as close to the demarc, but in the correct sequence of cables.

The filter simply isolates the voice band from the main inbound line, the DSL and voice signals have dwelt on the same copper all the way from the exchange, its not important to isolate them out as soon a possible, but to isolate them at the ideal location where the voice parts can be taken off and distributed and leaving the main line with DSL (and voice but not to be used) off to the modem in a clean single transmission line.

The voice cabling in the house can be all over the place and tapped off and changing in cable type as much as it likes, the filter will stop any poor impedance match issues all that presents. The cable from the demarc to the modem however must have a clean untapped transmission line, the voice circuits via the filter can connect to that where ever is convenient.

I reckon the cupboard would be a good place to put the filter unless you can run a new cable to the garage all the way from the demarc. Otherwise you dont really want that master jack between the demarc and the modem.

Time to find a new industry!

I picked up the splitter today, and in my excitement (sad I know) I forgot to get some connectors, but I thought I'd install it anyway and see what happened...

This is just with the wires twisted together, no tape or connectors and with a old ADSL router and a wireless connection, so I'm happy with that.

Hi, your modem stats are of more importance than the speedtest result when trying to see the improvements you have made from line conditions, so if you could post those.

And also as richard says, a 128k upload limit (due to your plan limit) will limit your download speed to 4-5Mb/s as shown by your speedtest result this will apply even if you had a 100Mb/s line ability.

That sucks about the 128K upload limiting to 4-5mbps download, I won't rush out to buy a new ADSL2 modem then. I'm not that keen on changing plans at the moment as it will mean losing 4 hours of free off peak traffic.

Unfortunately I can't see the modem stats, unless they well hidden somewhere, but I can't find anything on google about how to get them either.

Hi, thats them 43dB, 3km of cable, speed looks about right, although I see you have interleaving off, if you put it on the speed would probably be more like 6Mb/s.

While I try to hunt for how to turn Interleaving on, what is it?

Also the 3km thing, are you saying I'm about 3km from the exchange?

Interleaving is controlled by Telecom, you cannot switch it, it is not normal to switch it off unless you request it to reduce latency, so someone would have selected it.

And yes the modem is reporting 43dB of downstream loss, this equates to roughly 3km of cable, what do you think it should be, remember that the cable may go via a convoluted path, not the logical direct one.

I've put a request into to Slingshot to turn it on. I'm on the Torbay exchange which is only about 1.8km away by road. Apparently we are scheduled for a cabinet upgrade in December so it'll be interesting to see if that makes a difference
