What is the exact error text?

[edit]

Your network installer has most likely modified your config files, so post those again.

If you still have these lines:

 device=c:\net\nemm.dos
device=C:\NET\workgrp.sys
DEVICE=C:\net\tcpdrv.dos /I:c:\net
device=c:\net\ne2000.dos

you could try using 'devicehigh=' instead of 'device='

but really would prefer the new config, the exact error message, and where in the sequence it occurs.

Ah yes you would need netbios to resolve names for DOS, or setup WINS service on your XP machine and point the DOS machines WINS address at the XP. Or just use IP numbers instead of machine names. Win 2k and XP don't use netbios the same, so IP addresses can end up as the easiest way to access SMB file shares.

I vaguely remember there was a way to use EMM386 as either extended or expanded memory for some kinds of memory workarounds, but is STACKS 0,0 the right setting?

Time to find a new industry!
