on adsl, your gonna max out at 900~ on the best of lines realisticly..

on vdsl, with your attenuation, you should get close on the max of 10mbit.

That's what I was thinking. The performance didn't seem notably poor, given that it's only ADSL. VDSL would likely provide a considerable bump to upstream performance.

The worst part is that there do seem to be some heavy torrenters on the connection at the moment. It's absolutely killing performance, and I even banned one of the devices from the network for about ten minutes just to gauge the improvement (hint: It was large).

Proper QoS won't do much when there's just such an astronomical amount of stuff going on at any given time. It would be awesome to have two separate VDSL connections. Oh, how I wish UFB was here!

The landlord just knocked on my door as I was browsing the forums. We're going to at least be upgrading from ADSL to VDSL soon! He called Slingshot earlier today and went over them with what I said.

They'll be mailing the modem soon, and we should have a technician out in a few weeks.

The rest of the month is going to be incredibly long and painful (especially since I also had a Radeon 7970 die during the flight from America), although early-to-mid March shall be quite promising.

torrenting always isnt gonna be the best...

ild recommend looking at a stronger router/modem than the slingshot stock one, they bought in one that was on a lower price point to try to make it cheaper, quite a few people with issues with it.

17 people is bound to kill the poor thing.

I've got the EA4500 for routing, which is actually quite powerful and can handle a heavy load. Do you think the generic VDSL modem they supply will be okay if it's bridged, though? Since it's VDSL, I'll be able to hook up via PPPoE, bridge the connection to the standalone router, and can just use the modem as a simple gateway at that point.

I should be able to get it to bridge. Or at least, I sure hope so! This current ADSL2 modem supports bridging, although since the current connection is set up via PPPoA and not PPPoE, it doesn't really benefit me much. I'm comfortably in a solid half-bridge mode, though. I was able to disable the integrated router's NAT and DHCP server, and enable PPP IP Extension. I did keep the modem's QoS enabled, though. The connection goes south without it! I would have thought that the router's QoS would have been plenty, but I was clearly mistaken.

i've got the slingshot modem, it appears that it does support bridging (under the connection settings in protocol theres mac encapsulation routing, pppoe and bridging. i suppose thats what you want right?)

haven't tested its wifi, i use an apple airport express for that.

port forwarding does not work, on minecraft people can connect to your server and then are disconnected after a few seconds.

PS: what on earth is mac encapsulation routing?

VDSL connections use PPPoE so yes, you can do a full bridge.

Yes, actually, there has been a lot of progress! I *think* the modem arrived (I'd have to check with the landlord), but I'm not sure when the technician will be out. However, that's not what's important right now. What is important is that I finally sorted out Internet usage and got people to properly set up their torrent clients (if they use them) so that seeding doesn't kill the entire network. The connection is far better-performing and more reliable. I haven't had any notable issues within the last week.

The VDSL upgrade will simply be the icing on the cake at this point. I still can't wait for the UFB rollout, though!

out of interest, what do you mean by configuring it to share the connection?

do you just mean only seeding/downloading at certain times or?

not killing the router with too many connections, too many connections per second.

not maxing the upstream and killing everyones latency.

the list can go on, not bring a prick and doing it at peak times a good one too..
