Mirddes: am i going to get banned like on gpforums for advancing unpopular opinions? the wrt54g is pretty dated and with a bunch of them you can toss together something that works. maybe i have some answers, i don't have all of them. mesh wifi and multiseat computing seem to be astonishingly unpopular despite their huge potential.
The fact that you've been banned already on another NZ forum possibly suggests that your attitude is at fault here.

Mesh as many together as you can and spanning tree will sort the mess out. Assuming they do spanning tree which I cant see in the description. It worked for me on openwrt with 4 devices just fine, but WDS on 802.11n 2x2 was pretty hopelessly unstable so I had to turn it down to 1x1 so a 75 megabit (or was it 72?) was pretty useless. It was actually more of a square network with one corner wired. To the other corner was lucky to speedtest 7 megabits, and that was wired into that other AP.
Taking the same radio to 802.11ac which will probably give you 450 or so air rate, that means 45 megabit across 2 hops, then 22 across 3, then 11 across 4, all with only one user using it. Sounds like fun with it getting full of devices.
If they dont then you just set up a massive packet flood as things go around and around and around the various links getting repeated constantly by every switch.

When you have experts in wireless networking with that technology telling you it will give bad performance, it generally is advisable to respect the advice because they have been there done that in most cases.
Mesh networking is fine for low thruput non timing critical stuff like telemetery and device tracking. There are better protocols than 802.11 designed for it which have means to prevent problems from hidden nodes swamping transmissions and to ensure fair thruput. Same goes for providing wireless ISP service. 802.11 in its wireless LAN form sucks like coax ethernet did but moreso because nodes cant detect collisions. For real ISP use there is stuff from ubiquity and others that contrl the timing of devices transmissions beyond what the spec says to help address these problems. Plain 802.11ac will not solve that because it was designed to make the client devices cheap, and dumb as far as knowledge of the network goes.

No, I didn't say your opinion was at fault here.. I said your attitude towards other members here was at fault. There is a difference.
From my understanding most high end wireless manufacturers only allow a certain amount of hops over mesh as well as a certain amount of devices. having 16 AP's having off the one AP wouldn't work.
Usually with mesh the access point will use the 5Ghz frequency exclusively for the mesh backhaul which means your network will only support 2.4Ghz devices.
I would only use it as a last resort. If you don't know what your doing you are best to talk to a pro as poorly designed wireless will give you nothing but problems.
