MadEngineer: So again for clarity, does the network work fine via the dock (not wireless - in fact try turning it off) with the wired network connected to the dock if the laptop is turned on before docking it?

Ok what you are asking me to try is to have everything including network connected to the dock, except for the laptop.  Turn off wireless on the laptop and boot it up (still not connected to the dock).  Then connect the laptop to the dock and see if I get a network connection?

I will give this a go as it won't hurt to try.  Cheers.

Look inside the Lan connector outlet and make sure that the wire connector strips are all straight and not crossed over or damaged.  Some thing in the outlet may be short circuiting somewhere when you plug in a Lan cable.

just my 5 cents worth. good luck.

Thanks for the suggestion but every other device connected to this same LAN port works fine.  There is something up with either the Lenovo OneLink Pro dock or the X1 Carbon I have (settings or otherwise).

I am fighting for Lenovo to send someone to me on site and I think I have almost got to that point.

Lenovo contacted me yesterday with a temporary solution.  I had to do the following:

  • make the SSD number 1 in the boot priority (had done this previously)
  • make the SSD the network boot device (pretty sure I had already tried this too)
  • disable secure boot
  • enable legacy boot
After taking the exact actions above, low and behold the laptop now boots while connected to the dock with the Ethernet also connected to the dock.

Lenovo have admitted there is an issue with the BIOS which they are working to address and will release a fix in due course.  Given the equipment I purchased should be a fairly standard setup, I'm surprised this wasn't picked up long before now.  At least can finally see things moving!

Thanks to everyone here who provided input and suggestions.
