Yes you should really tidy that up, those patch cables are just waiting for some one to catch them and drag everything on to the floor! I would suggest a another cabinet to replace that wall bracket could at least enclose everything.

At the home owners' request I have put in a few of the in-wall steel "data cabinets" but I do not recommend them. They are not well designed for the equipment they house (IMHO).
if there are 8 (or fewer) RJ45 sockets I would recommend a couple of standard flush boxes with 4 sockets each for the "patch panel" and a shelf or cupboard for the equipment.
If more RJ45 ports are required you can use a 2U 19" rack for a 24 way patch panel and a 19" wide switch and it can double as a shelf for the other equipment.
These are my thoughts so YMMV
2U sounds more like a wall bracket, everything hanging out like the one above. If you do go for a cabinet I would suggest 8U is the minimum that allows everything to fit without being too crammed, although we often don't go any smaller than 12U to allow for future growth. Best choice is often a swing mount (if theres space) so you can open up behind it. Power socket in back of cabinet feeds the power rail and/or UPS with cables running across the side where it's hinged and velcroed in so you can open the back of cabinet without cables spilling out.
In-wall cabinets are ok as long as there is a cable pathway to run extra cables in future, definitely preferable to sitting modems of shelves next to 4-way outlets but if its tidy, manageable and keeps everything out of the way then you can work with it.

@epr - what's the spacing like for plug packs on the Jackson 1RU power rail?
Too bloody tight for my liking but more annoying imo is the fact it is set back about a cm which means even if the item above it is flush you can't put a long device in there so my remote restart device i use for my routerhas to be plugged in behind it. You can just see it in the pic i think.
Usually the power rail goes in the back of the cabinet so it doesn't get in the way of anything you sit on floor of the cabinet, and I like to velcro the power cables into a bundle running up the side. I prefer to leave a 1U space below the power rail to allow for plug packs and let you feed cables under the power rail to keep them tidier. Messy power cables tend to result in plugs working their way loose.
Time to find a new industry!

Yeah I have considered that, but unfortunately all my CAT6 comes through a hole in the back of the wall bracket, so in order to remove/replace I would either have to disconnect my entire patch panel (not happening), or cut and destroy the bracket (not the end of the world, but still a PITA).
Wish I knew then what I know now when it came to designing this originally - I thought I was being completely OTT and at that point all I had was the 4U wall bracket!
In the top shelf of the master bedroom wardrobe, so a lot of electrical tape over LEDs to eliminate the unearthly glow, and everything 0dB.
EDIT: Hmmm... the power looks dangerously close to coming out of the PoE injector up above the switch, I'd better reseat that tonight.
