I don't know to be fair.

But, I honestly don't see the point of using Cisco routers in a home environment unless its something you're familiar with in your day job.

Why would I want to over complicate my life having to configure everything via CLI when there's perfectly capable routers out there that have a mix of GUI/CLI which you can configure to your hearts content with less effort.

Just go with an EdgeRouter Lite, X or 4 and use @michaelmurfy's guide to configure it - job done. You don't need an "enterprise" device in your home network, it provides little benefit unless you're using it to up skill or just enjoy looking at firewall logs of people scanning entire subnets for open ports.

Barry, as has been mentioned multiple time IPoE is infact DHCP, I am 100% certain that the sonic wall router supports this, if not I will eat my hat!, you will need to add that DHCP to vlan10 which would be on the interface connecting to the ONT. I agree, no need for wasting your hat lol :). will have to play with sonicwall, it would be amazing to see it working.

SonicWalls support both IPOE (DHCP) and PPPoE on VLAN sub-interfaces, and have done for many many years.

Depending on the SonicWall model it will generally run rings in SPI firewall performance around the various mid-range routers (note firewall, not plain routing). They are running multicore Cavium Octeon CPUs with hardware acceleration for these features + a proprietary OS that is much smaller that your typical *nix based routers.

The SonicWall can provide a whole bunch of security services that some people may want in their home. Mine is integrated with AD for user SSO, has web content filtering, application control, VPNs, SSL decrypt, IPS, AV, geo-IP management, the usual advanced DoS/DDOS protection, and a whole bunch of other stuff I cannot remember. You cannot fart on my network without me knowing.

On your WAN interface make you sure set your MTU to 1420, and disable fragment non-vpn outbound packets. Your performance will be better for it.

I Fully agree with you, it is just matter of curiosity sometimes and having a belief on Cisco being the king of Networking.

Hi All,

I still have a big confusion on this new protocol of having internet in our end via IPoE, i went and bought the edge router x as advised and i'm happy with it, apart from having drop offs here and there, it just drops internet during morning time, it seems that can be an issue with TrustPower but i have no issues when i use their modem though.

Do you think that there are more configurations that are required to be done on Edger Router X?

My guess is that it is some sort of DHCP lease renewal failure. Maybe the Trustpower router Carries out a renewal at set intervals, even if the existing lease hasn't yet expired.

You can also have problems sometimes if there is an outage on the fibre network between you and Trustpower, and if the ethernet WAN stays up. Sometimes the router doesn't know that an outage has occurred. So it doesn't know that it needs to carry out an unscheduled lease renewal.

I have been running an Edge Router Lite for almost 5 years. (bought a new one after my original died also). And apart from the 1st one dying due to flash memory failure. (problem with 1st gen ERL) They have been completely reliable for me for actual routing.

Although I'm with 2degrees, who use PPPOE over Vlan 10.
