This explanation of s true mesh controller system makes them sound very desirable. Do you know if the Unifi controller system with hardwired Unifi access points also works like this?

Yes that's how Unifi controller works as well. The controllers for different mesh systems vary in how well they do this and how many mesh support features they support. There are a number of optional specifications a controller/AP/client can support to improve a mesh network or roaming for examples 802.11k, 802.11r, 802.11v. Depending on the mesh system or controller some of the functions maybe disabled by default and you may need to go into setting to enable them. For example fast roaming (802.11r) can be disabled by default on older mesh networks as there was compatibility issues with old clients.

Thanks for all the responses and the semi-interesting mesh-terminology debate.

I feel like I want to upgrade to something with wifi 6 and 2.5gb Lan (for local file transfers).

Have a unused Deco X80-5G with a single 2.5gb port, but ideally want something with 3 2.5gb ports to use the 3 ethernet lines laid throughout the walls, connected to a second wifi 6 mesh unit via 2.5gb lan.

Think if you really need 2.5gb LAN or wifi 6. They are nice to have but what are you really going to use?

Paying for unused capabilities gets really expensive really quickly. If you are routinely doing very large file transfers it’s nice to have. If you are watching Netflix and making teams calls it doesn’t help.

Thanks - super helpful. I have some U6 APs set up using the desktop controller on a Mac. 99% of the time the desktop controller isn’t running as I just use it to configure them. Does all that clever roaming and handoff stuff still happen if the controller software isn’t active?
