its called a tri-wing screw. But i can never be bothered walking back to my van to get that so I use my flat head lol. Just push hard on the screw and the flat head will work. Yea i was going to say you probably had to two phone lines back in the day.

so yea run a cat 5 to that. generally we use the first pair (blue) for voice and the second pair (orange) for DSL. If you use those colours to it will make it easier for you to wire up the splitter as thats the same colours that will be sticking out of the splitter. (unless it is a newer vdsl2 splitter in which case there will be three wires out of the splitter but I doubt one of them will be in there.)

LOL, exact same here, got the tool for them, but find I cannot be arsed going to get it, so just use pressure on an appropriate sized flat head.

Ok will give it a go with a flathead, was tempted to do that at the time.

The splitter would have been installed aprox 2 years ago.
I have read about people installing the adsl splitter centrally with the patch panel etc, is this worth it or just leave it in the ETP?

Chevrolux: Did you manage to get a quote for the gear? I will be looking to purchase in the next 2 days hopefully. Thanks again.

There is no issue in leaving the filter in the ETP, but you just need a clean (ie non tapped straight run) of cat5e/6 from the ETP to the ST2206 with the blue pair carrying the voice and orange the DSL/Modem, and connect these to the ST2206 voice and DSL IDC headers, you get the exact same result as putting the filter at the ST2206, which ever works for you.

I didnt specifically ask as I kind of forgot lol. But I know the prices round about..
Dynamix 24-port patch panel $60 odd
PDL wall plates - about $9 ea
3M Cat5e jacks with keystone clips - about $7 ea
I can give you a spare 6U frame as like i say they are dime a dozen

so doing the maths... around $180ish.

not sure about what that compares like to amdex but that stuff is seriously SH!T.

You will find the 3M gear 1000 times better to terminate.

Here is how i had priced it:

Dynamix wall plates and keystone jacks from www.cablesdirect.co.nz
Double plate $2.97 inc gst
Keystone cat5e modules $5.46 inc gst
Flush boxes $1.10 from mitre 10 mega

But they only do single or double plates in 2 piece config
Their 4 port ones are single plate so the screws are showing

24 port patch panel from PB Tech $55 inc gst
8 port gigabit switch from PB Tech $74.75 inc gst
305M box Cat5e $156 inc gst
Telco Distribution module $50-$60 from electrical wholesaler.

I am happy with the look as long as they are reasonable quality and easy enough to punch down, i seem to remeber chevrolux saying that the dynamix ones are ok.

Hi, your pricing seems good, obviously you dont mind the faceplates are non NZ typical (ie dont look like pdl etc) but thats fine, as chevrolux says dont do Amdex if you can, stick with keystone, dont fall out of the plate as easy and the mechs are typically damn nasty.

Also how many outlets are you going to have, if its only about 20 then save your money installing the ST2206 and just put the phone patching on the spare sockets at the end of the patch panel, one for DSL and say 3 for phone patching, o more if you have less outlets.

Yea i was considering that to save some money, currently have a max of 20 outlets. So that would leave exactly 3 for phone and 1 for voice.

If ever you want to start pushing HDMI from a central mysky etc to TVs, that will also be best done now if you can. Even if you just get the wires thru. 2 for HDMI, one for networking, one for IR/whatever gives you 4 to each TV. You can do it on less if you spend more on the gear, there is a single cable HDMI, ethernet, IR and something else solution but its close to a grand, and specs cat-6a for the cable.

I currently have a 4 way HDMI splitter located behind the MySky Hdi which feeds 3 HD TV's via HDMI (10M -20M length) cables and i am using an X-Ray remote extender for the IR.

mcmillgd: I've been told Telecom requires you to have atleast one BT plug at the Demarc point.
Glad to hear I don't need it.

I don't even have a demark point any more. It fell off the barge board, so I simply joined some cat5e to the the Telecom overhead cable and ran it straight to the pantry.

If you have an older home you probably don't have dwangs in the walls, so running the cabling in the ceiling and down the walls isn't too difficult.

Careful with those double plates, I've been fooled by those before. If they are the same, they are actually Horizontal faceplates, not vertical ones. You can use it vertically, but, it just looks weird. I brought some single piece faceplates for the beachhouse (with the visible screws), and some "nice double piece" faceplates for our house as I thought they would look better. They do not as they are the wrong way. Everytime I look at it it bugs me (but, not quite enough to change them).
I see now that there is "Horizontal Mount." stated in the description. Not sure if that was there when I brought them.
I'd swear it wasn't :-)
Of course, you may actually want horozontal faceplates, in which case, I'll shut up now...

I perfer horizontal mounting anyway, never got why so many are installed vertical in NZ. I blame those horrid 60's vertical PDL power outlets for getting people doing it that way ;)

When vertical it can be a pain to get your finger in to push the tab on the plugs up - particually when its a tripple outlet.

Im not a fan of the PDL keystone adapters - the plug sits so far into it, that particually with the no snag clips it can be hard to push them up enough to remove the plug. Other keystone plates seem ok, and the ones where the face of the keystone is sticking thru mean you can colourcode them to know what they are going to incase you have not everything going back to a single patch panel.
