I'm new to these products,but in the process of building a few large networks for residential and commercial both with over 125 users each. The best Ubiquiti core router advertises 2 mpps and Mikrotiks routers go up to 42 mpps. does anyone know if these numbers are accurate or even close?

Haven't worked with Mikrotik devices, but the ERL is a 1 million pps device. The ERL blows the charts, and delivers an almost full wire-speed gigabit routing experience. I haven't had a chance to push mine yet but the reviews speak universally of the ERL's excellent routing performance. The ERP is a 2mpps device, and again the reviews are pretty glowing.

So yes, I think these devices do what they say they can.

that 42mpps will be switch speed (no firewall, no nat, no ppp, and possibly a sum of traffic through correctly configured switched ports), not routing speed.

More information is required to offer an opinion.

125 users isn't all that many however it worries me if you're setting up either of these devices for that many users without experience in deploying and managing such devices.

Perhaps the plan might be to partner with some of the fine folks on geekzone.

@AICOM as others have suggested on the Mikrotik this is switching speed, on the Edgerouter this is routing speed w/ firewall, some rules etc. The Edgerouter should be able to manage this fine however you're best to consult with somebody on here regarding it. I've done a setup before with this amount of users on a 100/100Mbit connection fine however it really comes down to how complex the network is.

I found a mikrotik ccr1009-8g-1s for $199 1.2 ghz cpu 9 cores, 8 mpps, 8 gigabit ethernet ports, 1 sfp, 1gb ram

Vs a

Edgerouter pro $330 1 ghz dual core with packet acceleration, 2gb ddrm, 8 gigabit ports, 2.4 mpps

Mikrotik can be easily upgraded to a more advanced router by copying router settings to win zip, but ubiquiti is more user friendly and awesome 24/7 immediate chat support.

Any thoughts?

@AICOM The Mikrotik CCR's have a fast switching capacity however even with their beefy processors etc still perform around the same as the Edgerouter Pro and use more power doing so. The Edgerouters have full hardware acceleration for routing etc which makes them incredibly fast devices and in Ubiquiti's case you're also dealing with Ubiquiti's own fork of Vyatta (see Here) which is a very polished router operating system based off Debian Linux.

There are pros and cons to both devices but I've personally come from the Mikrotik world over to EdgeOS and to be perfectly honest in my case I'd much prefer the Edgerouter based off ease of use, performance, software features etc. Ubiquiti really listen to their customers and implement things to the official firmware basically on request (if you have a look at their software changelogs you'll see what I mean) which for me is far better than the closed source nature of RouterOS. They're also quick to implement fixes and considering the Edgerouter Lite from 2013 is still one of the fastest performing routers today for price really does show quite a bit about the nature of their products - they've been adding features in and performance has only gotten better.

Honestly, if you could then go and learn EdgeOS. It is a refreshing change from using Mikrotik routers for a number of years. Don't get me wrong, I still use Mikrotiks but the ones I managed are slowly getting phased out in favour of Edgerouters.

As per the packets per seconds really don't look at these numbers too closely. Both routers will achieve wire speed transfers with NAT enabled however (citation needed) the Mikrotiks are more likely to get bogged down with a large number of NAT/Firewall rules. @MadEngineer is best to have a take on this.

Thank you, I think I am leaning towards ubiquiti + I think it's a US based company, so I'm supporting home. I'm waiting on confirmation from ubiquiti now to see if two or more edgerouter pros can be stacked or linked. Two sfp ports is not enough for some of my projects, neither is 2mpps. I have one project later this year 475 units which will probably eventually use 750md Dia to 1Gig dia via solo fiber feed. If two or more pros can be stacked and utilize the 2+mpps from all of them, then I will go with the pro and add them as I need them.

Really - i'd be disappointed if my RB1100AHx2 couldn't NAT 1g infact I would hope even my RB3011 could do it - there's a couple of 200mbps connections on it at the moment and CPU at about 20% maxing out the 2.

Even the RB2011 could max out a 200mbps line (but with about 95% CPU usage)

IMHO the pricepoint vs performance of Mikrotik kit is currently pretty poor. CCR's and RB3011's are fine, but below that Mikrotik are in the position where performance is now very poor. Throw anything intensive at a RB2011 or have lots of firewall rules and you'll find it struggles on a 100Mbps connection. Fasttrack / Fastpath improves performance, but you lose a lot of functionality with this enabled.

There is also an Edgerouter lite. which is $190+GST from GoWifi.

I believe that does packet acceleration also.

Strange - I've got a few people down in Dunedin able to max out their Gigatown connection w/ an Edgerouter Lite. One would assume the Edgerouter Pro would be quicker again ;)

If you're referring to the tests done online those were with earlier versions of the firmware. Now, most traffic is offloaded to the packet processor.
