One thing, when you actually share the network folder, do this....

Right click folder to share, choose properties.

Click the sharing tab.

Click advanced sharing.

Tick "Share this folder"

Choose "Permissions"

Tick Full control.

Then, when you access the shared folder from another device, make sure you use credentials that have authority to the folder.

Well, I went away, had coffee, tried again, absolutely nothing. What a miserable OS this is. I feel like I have fallen down the rabbit hole. Zillions of labels, variables, values, settings, god knows what that I don't understand and are not explained in any kind of normal language. Garble about object types and names but the net result is regardless of what I try, I keep hitting the same damned wall. The remote computer sees the shared folder but whenever I click on it I am told I do not have permission to view or edit permission settings and it is 'unable to display the current owner'. Why is it unable? This crap system never gives any useful information about anything. It just endlessly goes in circles. If I can't change permissions or the owner I can't change anything. I can do these things from the computer the folder is on but none of it makes a difference. From the remote computer I can't do anything because it says I'm not allowed.

I did read the permissions links but I didn't find anything that helps. I think I know how to set permissions and I think I know how it is supposed to work, but whatever I do, nothing changes. Unless someone has another magic solution like the last one, I am stuck. I don't know what else to try.

Can you advise what you want to achieve I.e. Watch this and that here and here, and see what the network gurus come up with? I'm feeling a NAS arrangement might be easier? And therefore less prone in case of future changes. I've had this in Windows as well. If shouldn't need to be a network guru area.

Not the routers job to do this. Why would it be.

If you want to know more. Not sure the mechanics, but, when using the pace then netbios names were resolving to an external ip address .

Let me start by emphasising that I don't know what I am talking about. I have always found networking icky and tried to avoid it. For several years I was very interested in low-level hardware and software stuff, and I built up a fair bit of knowledge, but then I dropped out and technology developments moved past my ability to keep up. So now I am more of a consumer than a techie, and my knowledge is patchy, but I still know a lot more than most ordinary users.

But I don't have much networking experience beyond just plugging cables into switches and routers, and I clearly don't know a lot about modern Windows security settings. Which brings me back to my opening sentence. I was playing around and suddenly realised that modern file-sharing was a lot easier (pause for laughter) than I had thought. So I figured why not link my different computers together so they could all talk since they were already connected through the router anyway?

I didn't want a file server, because then there would be a central point where I would have to store everything I wanted to be able to access. In my naivety, I thought it would be easy to have every computer accessible to every other one, so I could access any file anywhere from any point. That sounded pretty cool. And that is how I ended up writing this. We all live and learn, I suppose.

You're mixing up netbios resolution with a dns query via the router. These are 2 different things. Pace is doing a DNS query to whatever. Has nothing to do with NetBIOS as router doesn't do NetBIOS resolution.

That would just be the Administrator account, wouldn't it? I have tried that as well as giving full permission to 'everyone'.

A lot of residential/soho gateway routers do sniff out netbios names on the LAN and populate them in their DNS, in this case it seems the Pace has then linked this into the DNS suffix DHCP option when handing out IPs making Windows prefer DNS over Netbios resolution.

I get that. I had these issues as well, and what annoyed me, is on this PC and not that. So, my WDTV resolved all that, but that doesn't resolve your issue. While I have a PC, and use a PC at work, I moved to OSX. It all just works as they say. I didnt want to throw that in earlier as I know you don't use Apple anything, but it does just work. A lot of good people have given a lot of good advice so far, and that is the issue. They shouldn't have to.

They are two totally different protocols though. I think you'll find that if you aren't using a WINS server then the netbios names are resolved by netbios broadcast traffic between computers or lmhosts file.

The pace behaviour is an anomaly caused by the search gateway.pace.net entry in its dns and given that its dns resolution behaves as it should.

Forget Windows sharing - it's a administration nightmare (that said, I have many shares set up on a NUC running W7 Ultimate with read-only access for anyone connected to the LAN for some plus specific user read/write which varies by share).

BittorrentSync might be the fastest solution for you. I use that too (the last version 1.3.109 that supported XP because I have some folders that goes to a mate's XP system) and it just works.

EDIT: IIRC when you share the folder you have to share it with the EVERYONE group with FULL CONTROL ticked in the SHARING tab under ADVANCED SHARING - PERMISSIONS then set the actual user accounts or user group names you want to give access in the SECURITY tab. It's counter intuitive.

Pretty sure you don't need to assign 'Full Control' permissions to the 'Everyone' group.... I don't for any of my shares, they are all Allow for either 'Read' only or 'Read'+'Change' both ticked.

From a clean Windows 10 installation all I did to enable sharing was have a fiddle around with the 'Advanced sharing settings' within the classic Control Panel Network and Sharing Center. Then I enabled each folder by going into the Sharing tab of the folder properties and under 'Advanced Sharing' configure the share name and permissions.

Not certain, but I suspect that by sharing the folder with everyone it's considered a public folder, and so blocked by disabling public folders. (Now that you mention it this issue sounds familiar). Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it should be safe enough to enable, windows isn't going to be broadcasting this share across the internet. If you are worried perhaps look into blocking the sharing ports from anything but the lan.

The only potential problem I see with Rikki's setup is perhaps password-protected sharing was turned on and there are no admin accounts on the machine with passwords assigned (including the built-in 'Administrator' account which you cannot log on to remotely). In which case when browsing from another PC you will be prompted for username and password but no combination will be accepted as you can't log in to an account that doesn't have a password over the network.
