Hi folks. I have contacted Google about these. They have someone that could look into why this is happening. The person has requested feedback report from the device and the flow used during OOBE, when the user encountered the error.

As per their reply to me "Google do support PPPoE over VLAN so this could just be a glitch in the app notification."

Today we switched from Vocus to Spark UFB. While we were on Vocus we did not have to utilise VLAN tagging on our WAN interface.

We have the original Google WiFI (model: AC-1304) and I had noted the original product documentation saying how PPPOE and VLAN tagging was unsupported. However I also came across this thread. I noted that we didn't have a Google Nest WiFi unit, but I thought I would try it on a whim. I can report my experience was the same as others, with poor feedback from the Google Home app and the unit itself, however after a few minutes our WAN link stood up!

If you have the original units, it is worthwhile persisting if you want to remove your ISP provided router.

We're on firmware version 13099.118.19.

This post made me curious. Having a substantial investment in 6 x original Google wifi AP’s I have been reluctant to replace them with a VLan tag capable solution and have accepted double NAT behind a Linksys router. 5 AP’s are Cat 5 connected via a Gigabit switch to the main AP that gets DHCP from the Linksys, performance has been great with no dropouts and excellent wifi coverage as you would expect with 6 AP’s. All the AP’s are running 13728.57.15 firmware. Having read that I could use a Google Nest router/AP as the main VLAN tag capable router and reuse my 6 Google Wifi AP’s for the mesh I was all set to buy one. Instead I setup one of my original Google AP’s as a new solo device in a new “Home” within the Google Home app and after configuring PPoE can confirm it connected to my Spark broadband on a Chorus ONT. It kept reverting to DHCP until I noticed the obscure save icon in the top right. Next step is to apply the same PPoE setting to the original WAN connected AP. Officially astonished after waiting 2 years for Google to add the VLAN tag feature.

Kia ora everyone, awesome insights in this thread but I'm still struggling to get my newly purchased Nest WiFi router connecting direct to my ONT (Vodafone connection if that helps).

Any chance one of you would have instructions for the lay-person to be able to get up and running?

Nest router works fine connecting through the Vodafone router but not at all when connected directly to the ONT.

Thanks in advance.

Under Advanced Networking - WAN did you change from DHCP to PPoE? It can take a few minutes to connect.

If your with Voda then it's still dhcp not pppoe, seems like it's not attempting to search for a vlan tag.

It's Google wifi being it's typical self, good luck

It may take a few attempts to get it connected - it tries to "help" by hiding all settings and being "smart" on trying different things.

It just takes its time - the user interface is very simplified so a lot of things happen behind the scenes without the user knowing, and take time.

Do you have any insight into why my AC-1304 Google WiFi is able to connect using PPoE the same as the Nest? The only difference I can see is now using Google Home app rather than the retired Google WiFi app. The AP’s are now on firmware v13729.57.27 Not that I am complaining at all, but curious.

No insight, the most likely explanation is the box received a firmware update at some point.

So, I have the original Google Wifi and i'm with MyRepublic because they allow a connection without VLAN tagging. Am I to understand there is a way to configure my Google Wifi to work with other ISPs now? what do I need to know?

What version are you running @lokhor and @dpmnz?

Also, @dpmnz what ISP are you on - does it use VLAN or just PPPOE?

@freitasm

Software version: 13729.57.27

ISP: Vodafone

Not a clue on which protocols it uses, I didn't have to enter credentials though.
