I'm a bit late to the fray, but how you pronounce it depends on which joke you are telling...


Guy 1: "I'm driving to Wellington next week"

Guy 2: "Oh, which route are you taking?"

Guy 1: "I have to take the wife because we're staying with her parents"


It really doesn't work all that well in writing!
