We are going on holiday soon to family in Ireland. They don't have internet in the house (don't ask), and signal quality is unusable from a standard usb 3g modem.

Because they are in a terraced house, the neighbors have wifi, we are probably going to talk to them about borrowing this. Just in case this doesn't happen I was trying to figure how I could get better signal for the mobile broadband option.

Found this on a uk website, has anyone tried this? Is it available here? What sort of gain does it provide?

Have been doing some further digging.

Ofcom the UK equivalent of COMCOM has a cell site finder for the UK. Have looked up cell sites near where we are staying.

Looks as though most are 2G - GSM towers, and line of sight to any 2100MHz UMTS towers is 7-9 Kms.

Just wondering if I wanted to use a 3g modem, whether they would pull a signal with an antenna from that far away?

Thoughts?

Jon
