In the next few weeks I'm looking at getting a Linskys WRT54GL and using the DD-WRT firmwre for the extra features etc.

I just wanted to pose a few questions to people who currently have Wi-Fi networks at home with regards to security.

If an adaptor is 802.11g, it supports WPA.. does this mean it supports WPA2 or is it a hardware limitation. I thought it was just through the use of a different algorithym (AES).

The DD-WRT firmware says it supports WPA2 after a new version release, hence the query if any 802.11g adaptor is fine for WPA2 use or if you have to specifically get an adaptor tht supports WPA2.

Please excuse the simplicity of the question, I had a quick look through Wikipedia but I didn't exact the info I was after, thought it may be faster to pick your brains.

All of my adaptors let me choose between TKIP and AES - but on the firmware for my router thats a different option to the WPA or WPA2 selection.

I'm just using tkip here since its the default. No point changing since there are loads of open wirelesses around for people to pillage instead.

Laughing Yea thats true, both my neighbors have Wi-Fi according to a flatmate (I don't yet have any wireless gear).. still wondering about the hardware.

I know the router will do it but will any 802.11g adapter work with WPA2?
