I currently have a Belkin (F5D5630au4) ADSL2+ modem and can't see any way to do half-bridging. It does have a DMZ option.

I need this to act as my ADSL2+ modem and then want to use my ASUS RT-N66U as the router for the network.

There is a breif outline of my setup here (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumId=66&topicId=101163), Belkin recently replaced my Play Max with there N750 and above mentioned router. At the moment i would like to set-up my network without purchasing any new hardware (currently can't afford any new hardware)

Is there a big difference between DMZ and half bridge mode?

Thanks

You are talking about two completely different things. A DMZ has nothing at all to do with half-bridging. If you can't find a half-bridge option then look for something like 'IP Extension'. Chances are you won't find it because it probably can't do it. You want either a Draytek Vigor 120, Netcomm NB6, Dynalink RTA1320, TP-Link (dont know the model). They can all do it.

The Belkin rep that i spoke to on the phone said that i would be able to put the ASUS in the DMZ zone and then use things like port-forwarding port-triggering as if it was connected directly to the internet

Is this not correct?

The rep was not you normal call center person, he seems like he was level 3 support and was based in Australia

Sounds like a lot of stuffing about. For the sake of $25 I wouldn't bother.

TP-Link TD-8840 is able to support half-bridge.
TP-Link TD-8840T is NOT able to support half-bridge.

I've read that the Thomson TG585 also supports half-bridge, but I've never tried it so can't be sure.

Double NAT with the 2nd router in the modem's DMZ works better than without the DMZ but it's still double NAT and may cause problems with voip and gaming.

Try it out and see how you go.

The half bridge/ip extension in some models of Dynalink and TP Link modems is a bit different in that it turns your modem into a sort of bridge/proxy and assigns the public ip address from your ISP to the WAN interface of the router.

There is also the Draytek Vigor which is different again, it has PPPoA to PPPoE passthrough and exposes a PPPoE connection to the WAN of the router.

PPPoA to PPPoE passthrough > ip extension/half bridge > Double NAT + DMZ imo

Unfortunately this order ^ is also the ranking in terms of most expensive to least expensive option!

that would be the case the best things always cost the most. I really wanted to get a VDSL2 capable modem if i was going to get a good one, do these do half bridge?

I would only get a VDSL2 modem if you are going to get VDSL2 straight away. They are rarer and expensive still at the moment and they will come down over time imo.

However, good news for VDSL2, Chorus WVS (wholesale VDSL service) uses PPPoE so no extra features/hacks/tricks needed (unlike ADSL2+ with PPPoA), pretty much every DSL modem can full bridge PPPoE.
