I've tried to google the hell out of this issue, but to no avail...
So recently I bought a decent laptop on sale along with my sister, we both play Diablo 3 and it runs it (graphically) perfectly (almost no fps issues at max settings). However I have been getting frequent internet latency issues and even complete disconnects.

To elaborate, frequent as in sometimes once a minute I get 5-10 seconds of hanging (i guess packet loss), then it comes back to normal, or sometimes I get complete disconnect from all internet for 30-60 seconds. Other times, for no apparent reason, I can play smoothly for an hour or more. I have programs like steam and chrome open in the background that I try to use when this happens, but the internet loses complete connectivity (not necessarily a Diablo 3 problem)

Now the reason I mention that my sister has the exact same one is that she is not having any of these issues, I thought maybe our router/ISP was the culprit, however last weekend she came round, we both played together, and I had all of the same issues, meanwhile she had NONE. We literally have the same laptop, bought at the same time from the same shop

I've googled and tried many a thing, using Wlan optimizer (stops it searching for better networks every X seconds) installing "alternative" drivers, and even completely wiped my laptop back to factory settings, all to no avail.

I was wondering if there was a good way to diagnose the issue and hopefully solve, if not improve, it? It is really frustrating to have everything working ALMOST flawlessly,.

Any help would be much appreciated, the internet seems filled with the same suggestions I've tried and have not succeeded.

Can you try with your laptop connected via a network cable to make sure it is actually a wireless issue and not something else?

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

Yeah that's my next step, I'm going to try it when I get home, the router is located in the hallway so it's a little awkward.

I'll report back once I've tested it out.

This.

If you can eliminate everything else, it has to be the WiFi connection.

Hi, thanks for the advice.

So I tried it with a cable directly in, and there were zero issues, ran smooth as butter. I waited until I had the issues going non stop for about 5-10 mins in the living room to ensure it wasn't a coincidence.

I then after 10-15 mins of smooth sailing with the ethernet cable tried wireless right next to the router, similarly I had a very fast, solid connection for 10-15 minutes.

So I am guestimating that it is something to either do with proximity to the router (although considering my sisters duplicate laptop had no issues) or something to do with having other laptops nearby accessing the same network, as it happens more frequently when others are around and they don't experience the same issues.

Any tips on the next diagnostic step?

May I suggest that you erase the wireless connection data on your laptop and re-add it using the excat same settings as your sisters wi-fi connection settings.

Also, how is the router placed in your hall way?  i.e. on the ground, on the wall, on a desk and furthermore are all your cordless phones in the house 'wi-fi' friendly (i.e. not 2.4GHz).

I suppose in this area I'm a bit clueless, but what is/how do you remove, the wireless data?

The router is at the bottom of some stairs on a chest height stand, it's an Orcon Genius internet phone/router thing, and it is the only non cellular phone.

I would try a different wifi channel on the router.

Alright I tried a different channel (13) although we only had 3-4 in range networks, so I'm not entirely sure if that was the issue. I will report back with more info after "rush hour" tonight.

Thanks for the advice so far :)

Ok so I changed the channel, same issues began happening around 6pm, feels like it happens more when people walk down the hallway/through the door (from the lounge to the hallway)

Sounds like it might be a strength issue... Anyone have any other diagnostic advice?

Yeah started happening again around 6 when a flatmate got home and started cooking dinner (in between me and the router)

Is there a reason why this might affect my device more than others, or should I just return it?

I had the same issues at uni today, trying to access webpages with random internet nonactivity.

It's definitely not the router or my network card (used a cable, no issues) so I guess it's just wireless, does anyone have any suggestions about looking for the cause/main issue?

Sounds like your laptop has a problem with its builtin wifi antenna, since its not affecting other computers to the same extent but becomes worse when people are around to block a wee bit of the signal. THe shop should get similar results by testing how far away both yours and their test laptop can get from a wifi access point, which would confirm that its a warrantee issue. They should find that your laptop has severely limited range, but in the meantime I would adjust your router's antenna to be perpendicular to the angle facing up the stairs at your laptop location so that it propogates the strongest possible signal directly at your laptop.

Time to find a new industry!
