I have had an acer aspire 5742 for a year now and it has worked perfectly until recently. I did a factory restore which fixed the previous problem however now my laptop refuses to pick up on my home wifi. It successfully picks up all the wifi on the street yet cannot or will not pick my own router signal. My router is a Vodafone connector. I'm not an expert in technology of any sorts so If anyone knows a possible solution please reply!

I had something like that on my Acer laptop when it was new.  The solution I found was to go to Control Panel -> Device Manager, go to Network Adapters and uninstall the wi-fi decive.  Rebooting the laptop then automatically re-installs it and then it worked again.. worth a try..

If that doesn't work, connect to the router using the LAN cable and try to 'Update Driver Software' for the wi-fi device, again from the Device Manager menu.

If you have tested your own WiFi and it is working my guess would be that it's on CH13 and your laptop is only scanning from 1-11

Jonb, thank you for your suggestion. I tried both of your methods however it was still unsuccessful.Sbiddle, thank you also for your reply but I'm afraid I don't quite understand you. I have no knowledge on computers so perhaps explain to me what you mean as though I am a five year old lol

You need to login to the router's homepage while connecting to it with the ethernet cable (modem has an 8-pin plug same as the network plug on your computer and should have come with a thick cable that fits it). the router's home page might be an address like 192.168.1.1 or something. the wireless section of the menu will have some setting for the channel that might let you choose channel 11 instead of leaving it automatic.

Time to find a new industry!

A smartphone app is pretty cool for this, as it can visually show you what channels each available network is on. It's worth checking that out as you may benefit from moving yours to a free channel.

Check that the router has not automatically assigned itself to channel 13

Many of the new telecom thompson routers do this - and most wifi radios built into laptops sold in NZ are not capable of our expanded band. The US market has them limited to channels 1-12

Go to start > all programs > accessories > command prompt
Type ipconfig and press enter
note down the gateway address
   - will look like 192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.254, 10.1.1.1 or something like that

Open up your web browser and go to http://gateway-address
Find the wireless network settings
   - in a telecom thompson this is under home network > interfaces > configure (i forget the exact path)
   - if asked for a username it will probably be admin and password will also be admin, if not check the instruction manual with your router
Under the wireless network settings, change the channel to 1
Save / Apply and reboot the router.
