Hi!

Not sure I'm new here, but I haven't posted outside blog comments before. I'm also not sure after looking at all the forum titles which one's suitable, so a mod please feel free to move this.

Anyway, I've had some oddities with my DSL-504G_TX (yeah, an Xtra one) using SIP (I'm using italk.co.nz and voipbuster.com). After a while of using a SIP client (softphone or physical phone, it doesn't seem to matter), to cut a long story short... the modem stops responding, including the web admin interface. Physical reboot (power cord pull) does the trick. Sometimes it's more subtle like certain websites in my browser not responding, or SIP not working but everything else working. A reboot (in this case, a web admin/telnet reboot command or a power cord pull both do equally well) also works in this situation.

So, first question -- am I alone in experiencing this? Firmware updates didn't seem to help much.

Second question -- what are some 'known good' routers I can check out? http://www.ascent.co.nz/Category.aspx?majorcatID=6 is what I'm looking at at the moment, though alternative sites or straight make or model numbers I don't mind hearing about either. I'm especially looking at 4-port Ethernet wired at the least -- on top of that, 802.11a/b/g or b/g (failing that g only) would be a bonus; I already have a 802.11a/b-enabled laptop but might likely be changing that soon.

Any comments? I've nearly gone bonkers on the first question, not helped by Slingshot telling me they haven't had many reports of D-Link trouble.

Thanks,
Jonathan.

EDIT: a/b laptop

Had exactly the same problem with a DSE router, they could not help either, everyone denied ever hearing about it, finally a guy at SipServe said it was not that uncommon and D-Links were a common problem depends on which firmware your running.

Eventually got a Belkin F5D7633, Ascent have them for $165, no problems works like a dream.

Just avoid anything with a D-Link badge on it fullstop. Everything they make is crap.

Bought a netgear router from DSE on Friday, they have a special deal in their catalogue at the moment ($40 off I think), only cost me $88! Has 4 ethernet ports, supports 802.11bg, all the specs are here.. http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/456b4e6b019ae8e0273fc0a87f99074b/Product/View/XH8485  Installation was a breeze, had no problems so far.  They've also got a deal at the moment if you buy certain routers you get a good discount on certain wireless cards, PCI/PCMCIA etc.  Can't remember the exact details, it's listed in the DSE Broadband catalogue you can grab in the shop.  Was just going to buy a 4 port hub and 15m network cable so I could use the laptop in the lounge, but this actually turned out to only be $5 more expensive.

mmm, ok, suppose I should have clicked on your link first, the router I've described above doesn't include a ADSL modem, it's just a plain wireless router.

Thanks everyone so far.

Any comments on US Robotics stuff? There might be some at DSE on clearance and some on Ascent; I'm looking at both.

Cheers,
Jonathan.
