I'm looking for a wifi modem or is it a Router that i want to setup at home. I have Telstraclears (motorola) cable modem internet at the moment on my PC.
Coming soon is a internet TV that i'd like to stream from the PC to TV. I'd be using android phone as well. Probably xbox 360 to but not at the same time ofcourse.

I've had a look around & (confused) i've only worked out that i need a modem/router with a 'N' in it for todays technology & speeds.
What is the best thats not a top end? I mean not expensive but that will fit my needs for these connections?

Is it a router i'm looking for that will sync with my cable modem? What's the best type to get that will connect with cable modem or will this replace the cable modem?

You need a router. You will connect the router to your existing modem and configure the IP address, gateway and DNS as provided by TelstraClear - if you currently have those on a PC you will need to set your PC to use automatic settings.

Yuo can connect your existing PC to the router via ethernet cable or via WiFi. Both will do just fine, however expect performance over WiFi to be a lot less than what you get over ethernet cable directly to the router.

As per using WiFi to stream content to your TV, it will work if it's SD (Standard Definition) content. As soon as you try to stream HD (High Definition) content you will find that WiFi is not as reliable as a cable.

Another thing to consider is your connection speed. Many cheap routers don't have enough processing power to move packets fast enough to keep up with a very fast connection - some routers might work ok with a 10 Mbps cable modem connection but if you are on a 100 Mbps plan then you have to select a router with enough power to actually move packets at that speed.

I am using the Netgear N900 router and a Netgear 450mbps WiFi adapter to steam HD content and it is working very well (have TCL 100mbps too).

My speed plan is 15mbps but getting there is another thing :-) I've had a look at I think all dual band routers around. Just does my head in. At least a dual band simultaneous would be a good option so far I've worked out.

Does it matter if these have adsl modem built in for it to work with a cable modem?

Yes, as there are very very few with a built in ADSL modem that will allow you to use ethernet for the WAN connection.

If its all new to you and you just want it to work then perhaps pick up a cheap tp-link to get you going since they are one of the more reliable cheaper brands and then you can decide on if you go dual band and how many streams of N you need etc.

The 2 and 3 stream N varients will show 300 or 450 (or a portion therof) but from my testing, in reality they dont do a hell of a lot better than a single stream "150" meg router when it comes to thruput.

For an internet tv which would be about 5m away i don't know what bands they use or setup just yet. I've read so many reviews about wireless routers & they all have flaws. Speed drops off quickly over short distance. The 5g band with most routers is fastest. So many things in the 2.4g band I just don't want any interference so that's why i was looking at dual band. It would be situated next to our cordless phone to.
I think i might just have to have the tv wired if it does'nt work out.

I had been looking at various models of TP-Link routers. They rate not bad. The warehouse carry 3 models. 2 of them adsl. Had been looking at the TL-WR841ND for only $89! BUT still looking around as it wasn't dual band.

So it's ok for a router to be a adsl modem even though i don't use adsl but the superior TC cable network? :-)

If it has an adsl modem it almost certainly will NOT work with the TelstraClear cable network.
