Hi,

I just saw that the ASUS RT-N66U is available in NZ (been away for a while)

I want to buy one and have it sit in front of my DSL-502T modem. Will I be able to set this up in bridge mode?

I'm not sure the best way to set this up. I am willing to buy a new modem as well but want a good one that will work well with this new router. Was looking at the Draytek 120.

I want the router to act as a wireless access point for multiple devices throughout the house, PS3, WDTV Live, iPhones, iPads etc. I want the modem to just handle the internet.

I don't want a double NAT issues as I play games online via the PS3.

I'd really appreciate it if someone could give me feedback on this setup and help me work out how to configure the items before I take the plunge and buy.

I have done a fair bit of reading on the web but looking for some reassurance that the setup will actually work! :)

You mean you want the RT-N66U to sit behind the modem? (Since it's not a modem)

You could just plug the DSL-502 into a LAN port on the RT-N66U and disable NAT/DHCP on the RT-N66U.

Thanks for the quick reply, I'll give that a try tonight when I pick up the 66U.

Yes I want the 502T to handle the internet and I don't mind if it does the routing too. I wonder how it will perform with all my devices though, I know it is pretty old. I'm getting the N66U purely for it's improved wireless performance, and to act as an access point.

Still, I'll give it a go and report back! :)

It would be a waste to use the Asus purely as an access point. Fork out another hundy and get the draytek and bridge your adsl to the asus. Then when UFB comes long no need for a new router =)

Edit: Sorry just to add, the D-link looks like it can do half bridge so that would be your best bet if you didnt want to get the draytek. So set up half bridge on the d-link and then make the asus get a WAN ip by DHCP and you will be away laughing.

Hi mate could you give me more details on how to set that up? It's working now but have no access wirelessly to edit router settings etc.

Want to set up half bridge but not sure how - what settings should I put on the asus?

There's no half bridge but there is bridge mode on the 502-T I think it needs Aussie firmware to have half bridge.

Can I full bridge the 502 and have the asus do the net authorization?

it can't do full bridge. Draytek 120 is the one that does full bridging.

Thanks I actually read that but my 502t was supplied by Telecom and didn't have the half bridge option.

I tried to install the Australian firmware as others have done and managed to brick the modem!

So I need to buy a new modem tomorrow.

Should I go for half bridge or full bridge with the new modem? And what med price models would you recommend for going with the RT-N66U?

Yea if you dont mind spending another hundy get the Draytek. Way easier to set up and probably a better solution at the end of the day.

Just wanted to say a big thankyou for the help and advice. Have the V120 bridged to the N66U.

Line speeds have improved by about 25% and wireless performance is much better also.

My PS3 is working well but can I take advantage of the 5G band with a PS3 or will it only connect with 2.4G?

I could be totally wrong, and it's a big surprise to me, but as I understand the PS3 only has 802.11b/g (Is this really true???).
So the max bandwidth over WiFi will not be much over 24Mbs in an ideal network as 802.11g is only 54Mbits.

If one can use the 1Gbit Ethernet on the PS3 and connect it to the ASUS RT-N66U directly (or indirectly via Ethernet over Power ~200Mbits) one would be able to make a marked improvement in network access.

Another thing, if you can remove all 802.11g devices from your network, you'll be improving overall WiFi access as WiFi panders to the lowest common WiFi device at the expense of other higher speed devices.
