A simple question. I've seen a thread before talking about a modem restarting bang on midnight every night.

Well, my modem restarts at the very least twice a day, at random times.

What are the possible causes? The modem itself, or the telephone line?

Currently using the Telecom freebie, the Thompson wireless modem.

Have you observed it happening or is it just the connection dropping?

I had a linksys which would periodically freeze up due to overheating. At least, that was my best guess - giving it more space improving the airflow around it resolved the problem until it was replaced.

If it is a power cycle my guess is your modem is broke.

Power remains on. The wifi connection remains but there's no data for a min and reconnects again.

So it is the connection dropping out?

Line quality and other connected devices are possible causes. Some cordless phones are known to have nasty effects on line quality (nothing to do with wifi).

You can try running the modem without any other devices connected but if you want to shortcut the process just unplug everything before you leave the house in the morning then call telecom/isp to tell them about the problem and they will run a line check for 24 hours to detect anything obviously bad.

They will also ask you if you have sky plugged in to the line.

RunningMan: Alarm phoning home?

Nope, not the case. We don't have a monitored alarm.

We don't have Sky and our cordless don't affect the wireless as it doesn't lose connection when we use the phones.

The interesting thing is, the wireless never disappears - it simply goes into a state where it says there's no internet. Then 30 seconds later it is back up again.

Have you checked the log on the modem - it should tell you if the connection is being dropped.

What is the internal wiring configuration of your house?

Modem line stats?

I don't have that information with me at the moment. I should take a look.

Looking at the wifi channels around my house, I seem to be in the clear with most on channels 1 or 6, whereas I am channel 9.

Does a connection with a network cable to the modem work during this 30 second time period?

Good question, that I wouldn't know as we don't have a computer connected via Ethernet cable.

Although I should check it out next time and report back.

did you ever have a monitored alarm? (I noticed you said you don't have a "monitored alarm" however if you have an alarm, it could still be trying to dial something)

My Telecom freebie (also Thomson) drops out at random times too. Never used to do it so I think its developed a fault over time. Contacted Telecom and they only have a 12 month warranty (unlike the old DLINK stuff they used to give away).

Moving over to Orcon UFB next week so that'll hopefully fix the issue!

Our alarm just dials a pre-set list of mobile numbers if the alarm goes off. However the drop outs happen when the alarm isn't set.

Do you happen to have another modem sitting around? I would be very keen to know if that fixes your problem!

I was hunting around for my old DLINK but think I passed it onto a friend as I was going to try that too :(

Been in the same house for 6+ years and only ever had a problem with the Thomson. The DLINK was ADSL modem only and I had a Belkin Wireless router.
