Have got a new router - so been setting up home network - and using DLNA to access videos on 2x tablets from 1 computer - works great - thought that was easy as - but am now peeved - have found that DLNA does NOT support external subtitle files (.srt) so thats my exictement killed...

Have then saw that you can access desktops on android through Remote Desktop...

Just had a play with 1 - but its based on using the internet - so that you can access the desktop from anywhere on earth...which is nice, but its not what I'm after...

I want to be able to remote desktop IN the network - so its basically my router using its 300mb/s speed capability to remote desktop and to be able to stream videos with subtitles....

Is this possible? If so...How? I've googled but it is just providing "cloud remote desktop access" or computer to computer which isnt the way I want to go...as want to do android to computer :)

Computers are both running Windows 7 and the Androids are both Icecream Sandwich versions :)

First off a 300Mbps router will give you around 40Mbps on average, up to 70Mbps in a good non noisy environment. You will never get anywhere close to 300Mbps.

Secondly remote desktop is not an ideal way to view video. The best approach is always to use a video player.

hmm 40mb/s would be better than the paltry 2mb/s my broadband gives me...

i do realise a video player is best - but what alternative do i have if I wish to watch streamed videos over a network WITH subtitles - I dont want to be downloading files to tablets, or having to spend time to merge files before watching..

I've attempted a myriad of programmes - and none provide the subtitle functionality I want.. MX player and VLC does, BUT the files MUST be on the tablet hdd - which is not what I'm after...

Just did some testing for you as I imagine I would want to do something similar in future.

Using Twonky media server, Bubble uPNP and MX Player I get subtitles working fine. My subtitles are external as well (just .srt files of the same name as the movie).

So I don't think its DLNA per se, could be your DLNA server, client or playback program?

gzt: What are you using as a DLNA server?

On the PC I attempted Mezzmo and also Wild Media Server...

on the tablets - I tried to use AllShare on my samsung as well as Imedia share...

so not sure what was wrong there

will try this Plex one someone just mentioned

On the side... Remote Desktop is not an "Internet" thing. It works over any LAN configuration. If your client is behind the router and the desktop is behind the same router then there's no Internet involved - providiung you're using the LAN IP address to access the desktop.

3) Throws computer out window as it didnt work

this is what happened to me :( - the server/client works great for video streaming - was perfect
but it wouldnt run subtitles even if i followed the instructions to a T....

so have given up on the concept for now....

just wish it was so much easier to set up an external networked hdd so it can appear like a normal hdd on a tablet so I am able to click a video to play - then go to settings, and "find" the subtitles file and let it play normally....

I use serviio as my DLNA server, with samsung LED tv as the client. The only time I've watched a movie with sub titles, I had to download the .srt file separately, and put it in a folder with the movie, with the exact same file name. This was because the tv looked for a separate file, than the subs that was included in the MKV. So yeah, it can be done, but it's a matter of finding a client that will also look for the sub titles I guess.

I use the splashtop streamer on my pcs and then installed the client onto an iPad and Android tablet. Works great for watching isky on the iPad.

This will never work. even with a 1gbps cable between client and pc. Rdp is not for video.
