Was running 1.3.8 for AGES (2 years), now upgraded to latest version and its a total dog - locks up, runs slower than a wet week when it isn't locking up, web interface is glacially slow, and wireless and wired LAN and WAN access is intermittent, unreliable and slow.

Is this router now just too old for Gargoyle/DD-WRT?

Should I just flash it back to 1.3.8 and accept my features and security are stuck at that point in time? (home network).

I feel like its a good router, with plenty of RAM, must just be CPU speed holding it back nowadays?
EDIT: wrong spec column - yes, plenty of RAM, but only 4MB flash for an image.

Anyone got a 1.1, and are you having similar issues?

I just chucked a spare Thompson all in one in place for now, as I was too busy to muck around with it the other day.

Hmmm trawling Gargoyle forums it appears a couple of point versions ago Gargoyle hit the RAM limit for these older WRTs.

Might have to revert, or investigate if DD-WRT/Open-WRT/Tomato et al are more lenient on this hardware.

Really want to retain Gargoyles built in quotas/throttling/reporting.

Also don't want to spend money on a new router lol.

Yeah i had that. Changed to a Tp link WR1043ND - OMG honks along. Much more stable too.

Yeah TP Link WR1043ND is the best bang for buck Gargoyle router, also has a gigabit switch which is a big advantage over the WRT54GL.

Most of the Tomato modifications still work well of the WRT54GL, Tomato RAF or Tomato Toastman.

WRT54G and 54GL's aren't a good option for 3rd party firmware these days. They were good devices in their time but the design is now ~8 years old and newer hardware is vastly superior

Thanks, the TP Link is only $99 too, so that could be a good option.
