I have a network with a Thomson Modem Router as provided by Telecom. I'd think it would be great for the majority of the population, but I don't like it one bit. My routers generally have DD-WRT installed on them for a bit more customization, something this router lacks.

We have over 20 devices connected to our home network and this router doesn't seem to be able to keep up. After a day or so my ping rises to 1s and I need to restart the router. I think it is over heating or something. This is a fairly generic router so I assume it is made for standard home use. What I would like to do is replace it with something a bit better for my situation, more robust. High, constant traffic.

I have a WRT 54GL that is repeating the wireless signal, but it doesn't really matter what the base router is for this feature. Currently all of the devices in the household use Wireless G. I am slowly upgrading to Wireless N, but it isn't really a big issue.

As I understand I have two options.

1) Purchase a DSL modem and a decent Router

2) Purchase another, decent, modem router.

I'm not sure which to do. It seems I am limited by choice for the modem router especially when you add DD-WRT compatibility to the requirements. Yet it seems there aren't any newer DSL modem models on the market. What do I do? Can you recommend a better system?

Requirements:

Must not overheat ( I understand almost all routers need to be restarted every now and then)
Must handle a decent amount of traffic
DD WRT compatible
Robust

I think your best option is to simply buy a Draytek Vigor 120 to do your DSL and then pick the best router to suit your needs.

or

Buy a Fritz!box 7390 and solve everything with an all in one device. You won't get DD-WRT, but you haven't really explained why you want DD-WRT compatability.

I use DD WRT for more Firewall functionality, VPN, advanced port forwarding and its DHCP settings. I also like being able to telnet into it and use WOL.

I'll have a look at your options. Thanks for the suggestions!

I use a Fritz Box, and have a similar number of devices as the OP. The Fritz has all the NAT customization you could want, with QoS assurance for SiP telephony (if you want to use a "naked" service).

The Fritz has a VPN service, too.

Thanks Jason. I might be able to ditch DD WRT if it has all those options. Starting to look like the best option.

EDIT: The next problem is getting one. Also I was just reading this post here: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=43&topicid=95475&page_no=1#564940 Do I need to worry about the telepermit? Where is a good place to grab one?

Also it appears they aren't very reliable. Any other recommendations ?

I got mine from Snap (http://www.snap.net.nz). They're my ISP at home and at work.

I have a static IP, and have a QNAP NAS behind my Fritz, which means I have access to all my media when I'm travelling.

Cisco SRP527, or SRP521 if you want a separate modem. Built in VoIP, VPN server etc.

Fritzbox 7390 is a really really good option. The telephony in it is superb. Also have the ability to work on the command line too if you like doing that. Also sets you up for changes in your service as it is one of the few that can do adsl, vdsl and ethernet wan.

If you are already have dd-wrt on your 54GL then just add a draytek vigor 120 for a modem. One of the most stable modems around. Vigor 120 does pppoe to pppoa conversion so no need for half bridge or double nat hackery.

And Snap are the NZ resellers. 390 for the 7390 and 350 for the 7340. No need to have an account. They will sell to the public.
