Hi

Has anyone trialed a US IP address? I would be interested to try it and see if Itunes allows access to US tv programs via my apple TV.
I dont like the idear of VPNs, would that be slow all your traffic going via their servers?

You don't need a proxy or VPN for this. You only need to open a new account and use iTunes US gift cards to recharge it.

Apple doesn't check IP addresses unlike Hulu and Netflix.

Just be aware that if you're going to open a US account you'll have issues if you start trying to swap account locations so just keep a single US account on a device for media.

Correct. Movies still use DRM linked to account so if you buy or rent a movie with one account you can't playback with another.

I don't know about an Apple TV, but in iTunes on your computer you can be authorised for as many accounts as you like.

I also recommend that you make backups of everything you buy; apparently some stuff has disappeared out of iCloud and can't be redownloaded so keep a local copy for safekeeping. I also like to remove the DRM but that's not mandatory :)

If you use iTunes Match, then any music you 'download' (of the ones that you have already uploaded to match) will be DRM free and at more than likely a higher bit rate than when you first encoded them.
