In your opinion what is the best Router - Modem I can get in New Zealand.

Before anybody can answer your question you'll need to answer a question -

What are your requirements?

Your question is a bit like asking "what car is the best?" - without knowing the requirements for a product there is no correct answer. It's also impossible for anybody to answer without knowing what requirements you have and what you want the product to do.

Good Point.. I want to flash it over to dd-wrt. And should of said that too.. (sorry). IM just finding it difficult to find one that is a modem as well. So I though I would ask to see what is the best one out there.

The Linksys WRT54G series looks good. But none are Modems as far as I can discover...

Trust me. You will never find one. If you want to go down the ddwrt rout, you will need a separate modem. It is something to do with drivers for the ADSL part of the modem that can't be modified for legal reasons.

I suggest a standard comparable router for ddwrt and a Netgear dg834g in modem only mode. You will need the custom dgteam firmware for it...its a great modem and makes tweaking SNR for that extra downstream grunt easy!

Having ddwrt on a modem/router would probably be way to o much of a memory hog anyway. Best off with two separate specialist devices.

I use a TP Link TL-WR941ND (about $70) running DD-WRT for the wireless router and a separate ADSL modem as Draviddavid suggests. Works very nicely.

Yea seperate modem router is best and means if you switch to VDSL2 or UFB or whatever you only need to replace the modem. For DSL always get a modem with full bridge mode, not sure about the Neatgear mentioned above but most people use the Draytek Vigor 120 for full bridge on ADSL2

I used Linksys WRT54GL ($126) as router and Draytek Vigor 120 ($101) as modem operating as full bridge. So far, I am very happy with this combination.

IMHO the WRT54GL hardware is well past it's use by date now. It's now 10yr old hardware that's limited to 54G.

If you want to use 3rd part firmware there are plenty of vastly superior devices out there that support it.

Seperate devices are best imo, I would go

DSL modem: Draytek Vigor 120 ($85ish) for PPPoA to PPPoE bridge/relay
Router: TP Link TL-WR1043ND ($85) running Gargoyle Router firmware

This is a good compromise between price/performance, if you want dual band spend more on the router or add for a seperate wifi ap.

I wouldn't recommend anybody buy a 2nd hand 54G or 54GL.

They're all cooking themselves now after a few years of use, I'd know of at least half a dozen that have fried in the past few months.

This is my exact setup and it works exceptionally well. Definitely recommended for a 2.4ghz + adsl solution. great stability from both devices and the throughput and range on the tp-link is very good for the price.
