My current switch (Tenda 24port Gigabit) is having a few issues like disconnecting my internet and internal wired network completely today and an on-going issue of dropping my IRC sessions.
Any recommendations on what to replace it with?
I could make do with a 16 port switch.

Hi, have you confirmed its the switch, in general switches are pretty reliable devices, more commonly you will find a plethora of configuration and routing setup are more an issue than all of a sudden a layer2 switch playing up.

As for what to replace it with do you need any management features (ie Vlans etc) or just plain switching, if the Tenda has been ok till now I will assume an unmanaged switch is all you need, but maybe that is your problem, your current switch is actually working ok, but not for what you are using it for.

As for recommendations, unmanaged, http://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecification.aspx?ItemID=370880

For a cheap websmart managed unit, http://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecification.aspx?ItemID=336756

I have assumed you dont require any SFP ports only UTP.

The current switch is unmanaged, nothing customer, it just plugs into an ethernet jack in the wall to my patch panel and then into router.
I was suggested to look at Level One switches by a Mate.
