Hi folks -

I've scoured the web and the forums here but no matter what I try I can't crack this one using published advice - and I've followed most of it already!

Basically, I have a desktop and a laptop with working Belkin bluetooth dongles and software. I can exchange files from either of them and synchonise calendar and contacts with my Nokia 6600 using Nokia's PC Suite, I can get dial up and GPRS internet access from the laptop to the phone, and I can exchange files between the laptop and the PC using the public folders set to C:\

I can get the Bluetooth null modem to connect instantly from the laptop to the desktop by double clicking 'Network Access' as a service in the desktop's services under 'My Bluetooth Places'. To make this work I had to change the network bridge settings on the desktop under TCP/IP to IP address=192.168.0.1 and subnet mask=255.255.255.0 and the My bluetooth places/desktop/Network access for the BluetoothNullModem to use IP address=192.168.0.20 and preferred DNS server=192.168.0.1

My problem is that no matter how I try I can't get internet access on the laptop using my desktop ADSL connection.

My setup is:

DESKTOP:
Windows XP Home

Network connections:
Alcatel Speedtouch USB modem (with share connection ticked)
and three 'bridged' items - LAN (Realtek RTL8139) routed to a hub providing hardwired ethernet internet access from two other PCs, LAN 3 (Bluetooth LAN Access Server) and 1934 connection. Everything was configured using the built-in wizards, which is why I guess there's something called the 'network bridge' which seems to be the only thing that's actually configurable to any degree.

LAPTOP:
Windows XP Home

Somehow I seem to have this automatically connecting via its dongle so that I can share files through the public folder without any logon procedure by default. ICS seems to work fine when I'm connected to the desktop via ethernet.

The only other thing I think I've changed from standard is to stop the 'servicelayer.exe' process from running in Task Manager. This seems to be something to do with the Nokia files, but before disabling it I couldn't get the laptop Bluetooth modem to work at all.

I'm afraid I'm nothing but an enthusiastic non-techie, and I haven't got a clue what half of what I've just written means anyway!

Oh - and I've also made sure I tried everything with my firewalls disabled. I've also read references in a few places to Bluetooth PAN, but as I can't find that anywhere I assume I don't have it.

Any suggestions more than gratefully received. Thanks.

Laurie
(PS: I don't have a PDA, so at least that's one less thing to worry about)

On your laptop's configuration make everything automatic. Don't assign any address - unless there are other devices connected to the network in the 192.168.0.1 range.

On your desktop configure the Bluetooth adapter with 192.168.0.1 (whic you have) and enter the DNS address from your ISP. You can find it running IPCONFIG /ALL from a CMD window.

Thanks - I've done what you suggested, but after resetting network access on the Laptop to fully auto it hangs when I get to 'registering your computer on the network'.

Do you have other DHCP server in your network? Other device giving addresses in the 192.168.0.x range?

Under both the network bridge and Alcatel Speedtouch listings in IPCONFIG it says that Dchp is disabled for both.

Would be easy to use Internet Connection Sharing instead of Bridge? ICS provides a DHCP server, and it seems that you need one in this case.

I don't know how I ended up with the bridge in the first place...as I said, I don't really understand this stuff.

How can I change over to what you suggest, and will it affect any of my existing network connections or modem settings? And once the bridge is removed, which device do I need to set up for ICS? - at the moment it only lets me set up one device for ICS, ahich is the Alcatel modem.

Thanks

To remove the bridge simply select it, right-click and choose delete.

Once removed, from your Alcatel you create the ICS to your Bluetooth adapter.

Make sure the Bluetooth adapter is 192.168.0.1, and you enter the DNS servers there. On your laptop check that it's getting the configuration from the server.

Ok, then back to the bridge of all adapters. You'll need to change your Bluetooth configuration to be like this then if it's not already. This is available if you have driver 1.3 and up:

This one is called Network access instead of LAN Access via PPP (which is the default method on 1.2 and 1.3). You'll need to manually configure an IP address on your laptop's Bluetooth, since there will be no DHCP in this network. Remember to configure the DNS on your laptop too.

Unfortunately I'm only on 1.2 - if I can't find a software upgrade is there any way of configuring that version?

You can try using NAT 32 to share this connection with the Bluetooth adapter then.

You've been more than patient with me while I try to work this out....

I think I've got somewhere with NAT32, but I still can't connect any of the machines on my ethernet network to the internet. I can see the drives on the other machines OK, and I have no problem using the Bluetooth null modem connection. I used all the default settings as your article described.

NAT tells me my ethernet adaptor is as follows (first number in all cases is NAT setting, second is what it reports as Windows setting). It's ticked as the main network adaptor.

IP Address 192.168.0.100 192.168.0.1
Mask 255.255.255.0 255.255.255.0
Gateway 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0
Name server auto 195.92.195.95
Address filter 192.168.0.1

The bluetooth adaptor settings in NAT are

IP Address 192.168.0.100 192.168.0.20
Mask 255.255.255.0 255.255.255.0
Gateway 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0
Name server auto 195.92.195.95
Address filter 192.168.0.20

The Alcatel modem settings in NAT are all zeros.

To get the bluetoothnull connection in the laptop working I entered

IP Address 192.168.0.20 192.168.0.1
Preferred DNS 195.92.195.95
Alt DNS 195.92.195.94

I've tried working through the help files in NAT but it's all gobbledegook to me I'm afraid. I've tried auto settings and every IP variant I can think of on the laptop with the ethernet (rather than the bluetooth) connected all to no avail. I've run wizards, bridged and unbridged, booted and rebooted and got no further.

Can you think of anything else I can try?

Thanks

Laurie

This is interesting...I've contacted support for NAT32 and apparently my Windows TCP/IP configuration is now as it should be, for some unexplained reason NAT32 is picking up incorrect details from the Windows Registry.

They're on the case to try to reproduce it as it appears to be something specific to Windows XP.

I'll update here as and when the problem is resolved.

Hi..
I already read from several informations regarding sharing internet and files b/w desktop and laptop via bluetooth but mine still unsuccessful.

My PC1 (Windows 2003, no service pack, not using DHCP) where my dial up modem connected to.
Tcp/ip and DNS are set automatically.
I enabled the internet sharing. (no bluetooth home network connection option).
Note: I need to set it up automatically because if I specify the IP manually and enabled internet sharing, it will set it back to 192.168.0.1. Do I need to update windows service pack?

My Bluetooth adapter ip= 192.168.0.1. subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Type service: allow access internet/LAN.
Press Configure connection sharing. Some automatic configuration happening and that is it.
Secure connection untick and disabled. How to enabled and tick it?

Laptop (windows XP home).
TCP/IP and DNS are set automatically. It can communicate/paired between bluetooth adapter pc and my laptop.

I can share files between laptop and PC1.
I also can use dial up networking via bluetooth from laptop to my PC1. The laptop can browse internet but my PC1 cannot.

I also have another PC2 connected to PC1 via cable, it only can share files NOT internet. It would be great if you can solve this one as well. Note previously before I have this Laptop, I can easily share files and internet between pc 1 and 2 without problem via cable.

Did I do wrongly?

I want to share this internet and files between PC1, PC2 and Laptop.

In the mean time, please solve the issue between PC1 and Laptop via bluetooth.

Your assistance in the above issue would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

I updated the service pack of Windows 2003.

I uninstall my bluetooth software and reinstall it.
Uninstall my zone alarm and reinstall.

Finally I can change the IP address of my LAN PC1 to other number 192.168.0.x and my bluetooth adapter still 192.168.0.1.
Configure zone alarm so it can detect all connection.

Configure bluetooth adapter settings like the previous settings.

NOW, I couldn't share the file at all.
Paired between PC1 and Laptop successfully but I couldnt share the file including internet.

I couldn't ping between PC1 and laptop.

Please help me, already tried several hours by changing bit here and there but still couldn't share the file and internet.

Your help in the above matter would be appreciated.
