Hello all

i am new to the networking business and have just installed my new router, I am waiting for adsl signal to be sent so that connection can continue.
What I want to ask is?
How do I know that the line is activated? is it a case of waiting for the DSL light to come on.
The other thing is I want to network a pc using windows ME to my laptop via the usb cable to pc and Ethernet RJ45  to my laptop?
Is it possible without any extra hardware? I ask at shop and they say no problems.
what connections do I need to enable IE:- lan, 1394, etc

Generally if the modem has a separate adsl light, once it's lit up it means the connection is valid then all you need is to punch in the appropriate login details to get the connection active.

As far as the router goes, you should just be able to plug the network cable from router to computer and everything should just work.  Every ADSL modem I've encountered will let you use the USB connection OR the network connection, NOT both at the same time. If it's got more than 1 network port then you'll have to plug everything into that, if it's only got the one port then you'll have to buy an additional switch to add ports to things.

thanx stevenz

I got the connection sorted now, but only on my laptop.
The PC running windows ME keeps throwing up a blue screen error when I try to network them via
the usb cable into the modem. I try using windows xp, additional tasks and reboot.
then get through the wizard to last page and blue screen. another screen says try using windows update
in tools IE explorer but i cannot connect to internet yet.
Bamboozled because ME comes with no operating system disk, only back up disks made from hidden
sector when purchased. these i do have.
Any ideas?

One other question.
And it may be a silly one. As up till now my connections to internet have been bluetooth mobile, dial
up internal modem, wireless or internet cafe.
My setup on laptop just automatically connects when i put in RJ45 cable without any control over online or offline
working. As I am on a monthly limit of 3GB is the only way of using the modem/router to connect the two computers
offline by pulling out the phone cable. Which is also my only way on laptop (removing RJ45 ethernet cable)
The documentation for the router/modem states that its capable of creating two internet connections on a Lan
with automatic IP addresses.

 I have configured the system.
network connections/ Internet connection/...internet gateway/ ..connected
there is no mention of firewalled.
 Help please...
