Hello,

I did first try a Geekzone forum word search for the VF HG556A but none of the previous questions covered my situation.I would appreciate advice on how to ‘recover’ or ‘reset’ a forgotten username and password from the Vodafone HG556A wireless modem currently providing my home phone landline and broadband.

I changed phone/ISP from Vodafone to Flip. Although transfer occurred smoothly (on ‘changeover’ day, I simply unplugged electricity supply of modem in morning, then when arrived home in evening I plugged it in again, started computer, and a few minutes later opened the web browser and found Flip broadband online), the wireless connection between modem and computer is protected by a long ago Vodafone username and password, which are….forgotten.

The current wireless connection is apparently secure (in ‘connect to a network’ in Windows ‘start' menu my 'connection' assures me it has a ‘security type ‘WPA-PSK’ active), if a disruption occurs and I need to re-establish the link, I may be…stumped.

I tried going to the URL 192.168.1.1 and using the default username and passwords on the label on the rear of the modem, but it tells me they are incorrect.

As the Vodafone set-up was more than a year ago, I don’t remember what the password was, nor if it was provided by Vodafone during their assistance to initially establish the connection, or if I provided it. Even if Vodafone still have a record of it, it is not their concern to assist an ex-customer.

My new ISP Flip doesn’t offer help for customers’ modems. Supplying modem and connecting is the customers' responsibility.
If anyone can offer any positive suggestions of how for me to be able to, if or when necessary, reset the username and password on the device, I appreciate the help.

I'm not sure what the username and password on the bottom of the modem were for you, but I know the HG556A usually uses the word "advanced" for its username and password. It could also be: Username: admin, Password: VF-NZhg556.

You can refer to this thread for more instructions on changing out the wireless details:
http://community.vodafone.co.nz/t5/Modems-routers-and-more/HG556a-modem/td-p/55951

The reason Flip does not support modem/wireless configuration is because if they did, they would need to train their staff on 50 different types of modems and the troubleshooting methods for each. You can spend an easy hour and a half troubleshooting them when devices don't want to connect for set up purposes.

The Vodafone thread explains how to re-configure the wireless at the bottom of the post. See how you go. :)
