My friend who came to visit one day brought his 2 year old laptop and tried to connect to my home wifi, he uses Windows xp sp3. Anyways, when I typed in the password it said Acquiring Address for about 5-10 minutes and then alerted us that the connection had failed. I looked up solutions on Google and tried cleaning his computer of Malware, Disabling and enabling the router and his Wifi Adapter, Trying different passwords as well as cleaning and tuning his PC of reg errors etc.

I posted here because I am wondering if anyone has any Ideas to solve this issue, I'll keep looking for more solutions and I would appreciate it if you could reply with some suggestions... This is very uncommon for me and I'm really confused :/

Your router is probably using a WiFi band and his laptop's WiFi card can't see it.

Errrr, he said it said it was acquiring an address which implies the laptop can see it.

Will it connect if you remove the router's security? Worth trying but I would be surprised if a two year old machine couldn't hack all common security settings.

if your wifi ap is offering only N , not b/g/a, your laptop probably does not support N and therefore cannot connect, even if you are able to see it in xp.

I've wanted to try but only as an absolute last resort. I like having a router firewall, and besides... all my devices and computers have connected to the wifi with no problems. In fact the computer I'm using right now is a budget one that is older than my friend's laptop! So its hard to imagine it is, but I'll try as a last resort. Thank you for your suggestion :)

I was not talking about the firewall. I meant WEP/WPA security settings.

You've just got to try eliminating factors to hopefully narrow down the problem. I recently came across a pc wireless card that wouldn't do WPA and no updates were available. So, worth temporarily trying the unsecured approach just to check whether this is relevant.

Also worth updating the laptop wifi drivers as well.

The laptop does in fact have the WPA2 update, however the laptop battery only lasts around 30 seconds. Do you think the wifi card has just had it just like the battery?

Make sure you are trying WiFi channels 1-11, and not 12 or 13, as some equipment won't support those channels.
