Hi everyone,

Today my uncle has purchased PLP to watch his premier league football.

My question to anyone out there who may be able to help is this...

For a typical household what is the best setup, I dont want anything hugely fancy just a simple modem/router setup, I get a great discount at noel leeming so purchasing from there would be ideal.

I may have left some important info out so please feel free to question me

Uhm, you only need a vaguely decent internet connection and a laptop/desktop/whatever you want to watch it on. You may need to be a bit more specific about what you're wanting to achieve, and what you currently have etc to get much specific advice. You talk about wanting a modem/router setup... presumably you have a broadband connection already?

Hi Inphinity,

Basically what we are trying to achieve is the best possible connection without lag, as you can imagine it would be quite frustrating to watch a game of football that hangs all the time.

We are currently on the basic telecom home package, so adsl with the basic telecom modem/router that they supply. However they have a rather large house with a few laptops and a few iPads.

Your question is really vague. What's a PLP? What exactly are you trying to achieve? What equipment are you using?

If you want to stream some kind of video from the net then a wired connection to some kind of hardware to play the stream is ideal. If you can't do that then wire to multiple routers and use wireless, on the same SSID usually works, but I do different SSIDs as I didn't know that when I set them up.

Hi timmmay,

Premier League Pass (PLP) is basically the service that is streaming the English Premier League to New Zealand.

My main goal is to get an uninterrupted stream (no lagging or hanging) at the best quality possible.

The gear we have isnt the best (basic telecom adsl plan with their standard Thompson modem,router, however we have the money to upgrade certain aspects as needed.

The laptop will be connected through the TV by HDMI.

Given the streams are in SD - don't do anything.

Plug the laptop into the TV and play it. As long as the laptop has decent connection (wired or wireless) new gear won't make any difference unless you have a really terrible connection.

Go to speedtest.net, run a test. Post results.

Only other issue would be potentially increasing your broadband cap - depending on what you have now.

I havnt had the chance to try a wired connection just yet.

Only managed a wireless connection and the quality was appaling and constantly hung :(

Options for improvement:
1) Wired connection. Might be cheaper to get Cat5e cable from Trademe rather than Noel Leemings (even with discount)
2) Get a DSL master splitter installed, if your speedtest results are a bit low. ($100-200)

In regards to option 2, would upgrading to VDSL sort that out, in other words will the technician that comes round install this??

Upgrading to VDSL has been an option we are looking at.

Yes, as part of upgrading to VDSL they will install a master splitter. But installing a master splitter should give some (potentially large) improvement to your existing connection, without the additional monthly fee for VDSL.

If you run a speedtest when you get home, and give us the DSL stats from your modem, then we can give some better advice.

The extra fee is not a problem at all, i will do the test as soon as i get home tonight and post the results to here.

Just to clarify, the DSL stats refer to my download speed and upload speed, and i should do this test while the modem is wired to my laptop? Correct? Sorry about the newbie questions :)

Yes, do it from a wired connection, and yes it will indicate your DSL speeds. We need to determine whether your performance problem is related to your DSL, or your wireless LAN.

Best result was
PING=63ms
DOWN=4.55Mbps
UP=0.72Mbps

WIRED
Best result was
PING=60ms
DOWN=4.56Mbps
UP=0.67Mbps

Very poor so most likely not in a potential VDSL2 area. The actual router stats would be of more use.
