I have been through a few DSL Routers, mostly ISP provided (Thomson, DLink). Recently bought a new D-Link DSL-2740B to replace my Thomson TG585 v8 and already it seems to struggle with torrenting...

So i'm seeking advice and recommendations on a reliable and durable router that can handle heavy traffic and not freeze or stutter like my current/previous ones...

I'm no networking expert but I'm thinking of using my D-Link as a Wireless Access Point if it does have the feature. And maybe get a non-wireless router to handle the Internet Connection.

Is there any ~$100 modems out there good for home use but able to handle a bit of heavy traffic when needed to?

I guess the question is more what you're setting your torrent setting to. It's easy to trash even a high end device if you're trying to run too many connections through it.

oh ok! ummm well would this have to do with allowed number of connections setting? I use utorrent with default settings... I am not a heavy torrent user but i download stuff via torrents if available

Draytek Vigor 120 if you don't need it to have wifi, Asus DSL-N12U if you do. What do you mean by freeze/stuttering with torrenting, though?

The router drops Internet Connection, although i can still access stuff locally (file sharing/remote desktop) through Ethernet/Wireless... This is with my almost new DLink Modem... Internet gets fixed upon reboot but stalls again if i try downloading torrents

Limit the upload speed in your torrent client (something less than 50kB/s say), and lower the maximum number of connections. It probably has more to do with the default uTorrent setup saturating your bandwidth than with the modem.

Spend a little more and go separate modem and router imo, with the router flashed with open source firmware rather than the manufacturers. It will be way better and give you way more options and control including QoS, Bandwidth quotas, traffic usage graphs etc etc.

Modem : Draytek Vigor 120 (use PPPoA to PPPoE passthrough to offload the NAT/DHCP etc work to the router)
Router: TP Link TL WR 1043ND flashed with Gargoyle Router firmware

yea i already set the upload to 50k... maybe i need to have a look into lowering the max number of connections

They're the same thing. DV120 is the abbreviation of Draytek Vigor 120.

Limiting speed doesnt help, its the number of connections hitting a limit on the router

Try turning off the SPI firewall on the router, as that gets hammered with all the UDP and many have insanely long timeouts of hours or days on UDP rules.

If you download torrent files and use a tracker then disable DHT, that also has heaps of connections. If you use magnet links with no tracker, that would obviously make it not work however.

I run a Netgear DG834G.

It does not do nearly as much anymore, but in a flat of 5, torrents were ripping 24/7 and often hit 600GB to 800GB per month on a 20Mb/s connection. It is flashed with custom firmware from DGTeam which provides more control over certain ADSL settings such as SNR.

I picked it up off TradeMe for $60.00, but you can find them on there for $30.00

I still have a DG 834G as my slingshot router, running stock firmware. Web UI totally dies during torrenting and takes a few mins to recover after stopping, but the traffic keeps flowing and browsing doesnt take a total hit like with previous routers. Different versions matter tho, the first was bigger, greyer and no good.

The V3 or V4 is the one you want. I am considering getting another one incase this one breaks. They won't be around forever and the people who made the custom firmware for it seem to have disbanded.
