Hi there....newbie user of an ipaq 4355 pocket pc here.....

Got a strange issue that's just cropped up....had my PDA for about a week and integrated wifi has worked fine with my
Linksys WAP11 Wireless Access Point (a Linksys BEFSR41 Router with WEP enabled). I was surfing using IE no problem on my shiney new PDA.

However, as of yesterday, now when I start IE on my pocket pc, it doesn't matter what I try
to access (URL or Favourite), I get an error message box popping up
saying "The page you are looking for cannot be found."

I made no settings changes that I'm aware of, and I have confirmed settings are correct, the device shows the connection to my linksys WAP router is solid.  Other wifi devices here like the thinkpad I'm writing up this post on are working fine on the same connection, so its something with the settings on the device.

So I don't get it...if anyone has had this issue, I would love to hear thoughts on remedies!

Thanks and all the best,

DGM

It could be just a configuration problem. T recreate the configuration on your Pocket PC open File Explorer, browse to \Windows and tap on welcome.exe. Execute the program and follow the instructions... Soft reset the device and try again.

I recommend VxUtil to check if the device is really connected and can communicate with servers on the Internet.

Thanks for the direction on this issue.

Ran the welcome.exe routine followed by soft reset, that didn't help.

Downloaded/installed the vxutil you suggested, and I was able to ping an IP address successfully - another PC on the home network here.  However whenever I plugged in a common URL like yahoo.com or excite.com in other aspects of vxutel such as get html, lookup or whois, I was not successful - got error dialog box "could not get IP address" in each case.

Am open to any further suggestions on this.  Can't understand how I can ping another IP successfully and cannot pull up anything else on the same exact WAP which is also working with other wireless devises successfully.

Thanks again,

DGM

Have you tried pinging wired.com by name and by IP address? If you are able to ping by IP address but can't by name then it's a DNS configuration problem. Have you manually entered the configuration on your Pocket PC or let the DHCP server on your network or router configure the device?

I tried to ping wired.com by name as you suggest with no success.  I don't know how to get the IP address for wired.com so i couldn't test a ping on that....sorry I'm not that advanced.

On this pocket pc, I have not manually entered the network configuration, its setup to let the DHCP server on my network router configure it.

It was working perfectly fine until 2 days ago with the default settings right out of the box.  I made no changes to anything in the setup - the router, pocket pc, nothing since I was connecting just fine.  I've made no changes since...yet its not working now.

You can use PING from your PC to find out the address. Anyway, try pinging 203.167.223.234 (one of the Akamai addresses for www.wired.com).

Okay - I did manage to get the IP address for wired.com (geek in training) - I could not ping successfully. When I tried wired.com, got a 'cannot find host www.wired.com error message.

What am I missing here...

One more thing, in the iPaq WLAN Wireless Adapter screen the 'use server-assigned IP address' field is checked which I think enables DHCP - I'm not sure if that is why in name servers tab, the dns, alt dns, wins and alt wins fields are empty.

Perhaps that is why the pocket pc shows 'connected' to my WAP, but still cannot pull up any IP's/websites in PIE.

You may be right - this appears to be a DNS settings issue I think.
