I am looking at moving my router and switch into a closet (top shelf of HWC) and thought I should include a UPS so the internet will still be on when there is a power cut.
I suspect a UPS like the APC Smart-UPS 1500 I have for my server would be major overkill, as would any of those large shoe-box type ones (would be too heavy for shelf and my arms anyway!).
I have seen some other types of UPS that look like multi-plug power boards on steroids. Are these actually UPS's for uptime during power outages or are they really just multi-plug power boards on steroids?
Perhaps someone can recommend a suitable UPS for me.

Be careful it's not too warm in the HWC - heat tends to shorten lifespan of electronics.

I had thought of that, but the stereo amp that is in there (weird music setup installed by previous owners) is still going strong after 4 years, so fingers crossed.

In regards to the multiboard style UPSes, it depends. Some are genuine UPSes, usually no more than about 550VA (though that'll be tons for a router & switch), but some are really just surge protectors with a short runtime to keep things up in a brownout etc. So, check the specific product. Something like APC's Back-UPS ES 550 is a genuine UPS, but to be honest they're not significantly smaller than a standard desktop UPS form factor. It's even the same battery as the BackUPS 550 in the normal form factor.

Yeah I would say keep out of hot water cupboard, but if theres no choice then at least put a second wrap around the cylinder!

Anyway, APC BackUPS 300 would be plenty, but you need to be able to plug in power to IEC sockets on the UPS or get an IEC adapter cable to a basic power board. It does have a surge protector for the ADSL/phone line to protect your modem too.

Time to find a new industry!

We have 8 of them running our desktop PC's (Lenovo Think Center M58) and due to it being on a ship (diesel generators) we have a bit of a fluctuating input power so every now and then the UPS go to battery. They run the PC's (box and monitor) for at least 15-20 minutes before running out of juice.

can pick them up for under 100 new as well and dont take up a huge amount of space

+1 for the APC Back UPS ES range, they're great. I'm running the 700 with my NAS/PC.
