Hello all

I've got two bluetooth f8t001 usb dongles - one in my laptop and one in my PC (which is connected to broadband) - all has been well for about six months until today when I tried to connect to the internet from my laptop via bluetooth. I click "connect" and after about 2 seconds a dialog pops up saying:

"The Network Access connection failed: The operation could not be completed. The error was 0x81000015"

That's it. No help, no "more info", nothing. So, what the hell is error 0x81000015 and why am I getting it now when nothing has changed on either box?

I can still transfer files from one machine to the other (using either machine as the source) so the hardware is working okay. My internet connection is fine (as you can see!) - so I'm completely lost - and, once again, completely p---ed off with Bluetooth!

Both machines are more-or-less identical:

OS - Windows 2000 SP4
Bluetooth Software - 1.4.2 build 10
Dongle - Belkin F8T001 USB

Not sure what is this error... Are you using a shortcut in My Bluetooth Places to connect? If yes, perhaps you have to connect from the icon in the service list, and then create a new shortcut after the connection?

Do you have a new cordless 2.4GHz phone at home? Or perhaps you've installed a new software, firewall or changed network configuration?

I do have a shortcut to the connection but clicking that just brings up a dialog saying "error connecting" (or similar), when I navigate through Entire Bluetooth Network, then to the device itself, then to Network Access, that's when I get the 0x81000015 error message.

I do have a mobile phone, not sure about the frequency (it's a T610) but I've had that for about four months and nothing else has changed - it worked fine last night, now it just won't work at all.

To confirm - I can still send files to the laptop via bluetooth and from the laptop via bluetooth - it's just the network access part that seems broken. Also, I brought my laptop upstairs so it was next to the PC I connect to - when I connect from the laptop, the tray icon on BOTH computers turns turquoise (implying a connection) and the green leds on BOTH dongles light up. This only happens for a second or two, then both icons go back to white, the green LEDs go off and the error appears on the laptop (nothing appears on the desktop).

Given that I can transfer files okay, it seems the hardware is working okay - could it be a network issue?

If the service doesn't show up on the Bluetooth list on your client, perhaps some change in configuration? Have you tried removing the pairing and doing it again?

Check the service is marked to start automatically.

Make sure the ICS or Bridge are still there.

The service shows up fine on both the client (laptop) and the host (PC), I've checked the configuration (there's not much to configure) and nothing's changed. I even had a look in HKLM\Software\Widcomm to see if the registry had somehow scrambled but that seems okay as well.

I did try unpairing and repairing the devices as a matter of course, but this hasn't helped either! :(

Help!

The error seems to be related to Network Access service not available, and it's common to appear when trying to access this kind of service when using a Microsoft USB dongle with Windows XP SP1 (which is not the case). If you go to the server Bluetooth configuration, is it marked to "Startup Automatically"?

Yep. And they're both Belkin dongles. Weird or what?

Just another update. I've also got an iPAQ with a TDK bluepaq jacket. I've just undocked it and connected to the internet with no problems via bluetooth! This is getting stranger by the minute...

So far I've confirmed that all the hardware is working correctly, the bluetooth installation on the host PC is working correctly and that at least the file transfer part of the software is working correctly on the laptop.

One thing I think it might be is the authentication bit - usually, when I connect to the internet via bluetooth a balloon will pop up by the system tray asking for me to allow the connection - it doesn't do this anymore when I try to connect from the laptop - maybe this is what's causing the problem? I have checked the service details though - it's configured to notify me just as it's always been.

When you try to connect, have you noticed if the icon goes green on the server side, indicating activity?

Both icons (client and server) go green for a brief second, then the error message appears on the client and both icons go back to white.

After a lot of messing around I reinstalled the Belkin software on my laptop (client) and its all working okay again now. I presume something got screwed up at some point...
