I've got a rather unique requirement for a decent wireless access point (the current one I have isn't working very well).

Client has a wireless access point (separate from their ADSL router) in their offices.  Due to circumstances outside my control, the power plug the AP is plugged into gets switched off every night.  It's not feasible to run power to the AP from a circuit that stays on 24/7 (although an AP that supports PoE could be a solution as I could run power from the always on switch).

The big issue I have is every three/four months, the AP loses all it's settings, which I think is due to power being constantly switched on and off.  This isn't good as it means all the neighbours get access to an open wireless.

Any ideas of a good AP that can handle being switched off all the time?

I would think that using PoE would be the best option here, and even if the AP doesn't support it you can modify it to do so like this: http://www.bogus.net/~torh/wrt54gl/ (it's very crude, but worked well for me)

Else, getting something that is designed to be powered over PoE would be the best way to go, rebooting wireless routers in general all the time is not too good for their flash and sanity.

Put one of these in.

PoE to Ethernet and 5/9/12 volt converter.

Patch thru from your PoE switch or ejector then put this on the end.  Will give you Ethernet and strip out the power for your router.

Use them heaps when we have cordless base stations, DECT repeaters and APs that are not PoE and miles from a power socket.

Should be able to get them from Anywhere Computer Accessories

I would run a network cable and run the AP off PoE.

Nothing likes being power cycled continuously.

There is no requirement to buy a new AP, just power it over with the existing plug pack using a PoE injector / splitter cable.

Jaycar sell the required cables, you'll get them a bit cheaper from other usual suppliers online http://www.jaycar.co.nz/productView.asp?ID=YN8410

There's a switch near the exit which turns off everything on that circuit.  Ensures nothing is left on accidentally.
