Hi All,

I have a patch panel located in the garage which is linked to my structured wiring and also the main Telecom line.

I need a RJ45 to female BT adapter to fir between the patch panel and the ADSL filter and have found quite a few hits on the net, but there seem to be different types, e.g. PABX master, Full Master, Slave, Secondary, etc.... so not sure which one to get.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Secondary. The others have ringing capacitors in them which will be of no benifit upstream of an ADSL filter, and may degrade it.

You would use PABX master ones downstream of any structured cabling if you have any vintage phones which dont ring with a straightfoward RJ45 to RJ12 cable, or have a fixed cable and you dont want to go chopping it off and crimping on a RJ45 instead.

yep - considering the general wholesale price is around $5.00 a unit (full master version with 300mm lead)

Thanks for the quick responses guys.

I'll go for the secondary one then, but not from Dick Smiths. I've been getting all my patch cables from electrician supply stores and it's amazing how much cheaper they are.

To be fair i wasn't advocating DSE as anything but a last resort. They are horrendous in pricing terms. :/ However happy to help, lol.

I'll stop you right there. You would not be asking this question if your structured cabling has been done properly. You should have a master splitter installed and punched into your patch panel. You can then use RJ45-RJ12 cables to plug into modem, phones etc.
Did you a sparky wire up your patch panel?

Yes, you're right. Due to budget constraints the electrician who wired the house did the cabling. Everything was good except for the finishing touches inside the patch panel. Lesson learnt, so next time I'll get the experts in.

Space is a real issue as I have already have 3 x 8 patch panels, a modem, a 8 port switch in there plus the Sky cabling goes through there as well - time for a bigger enclosure and some rewiring!

You could try and fit a xDSL splitter into the demark box, and fed the separated phone/dsl lines from there to the panel enclosure

Thanks for the offer. I'm in Wellington. I've got everything working now so will probably wait a bit before i upgrade. Thanks for your assistance though.
